'06 5.4 3v off-idle noise

my 5.4 in my expedition has a slightly odd noise just off idle from approx. 1000 rpm to about 1400 rpm.

it is a light knocking/rattling noise that is most prominent just as you tip into the throttle and seems to go away as the rpms come up over 1500 rpm.

it is also seems to rattle more in that 1000-1400 rpm range as you release the throttle.

the noise also is only apparent once the engine is warm. when it is cold, the noise does not seem to happen. it sounds very much to me like it is coming from the front on the engine, and is related somehow to the timing chains or tensioners.

the engine is quiet at idle and quite above 1500 rpm.

i'm about due for an oil change, and i'm considering trying 5w30 instead of the 5w20. it seems to me that the thicker oil when cold keeps the noise at bay, so i'm wondering if a little more viscosity when warm might help.

any ideas?

There is a new TSB for that noise and the fix is to replace the VCT solenoids with the one in my signature. The TSB is 14-0114

from what research i have been able to do, the VCT solenoids seems to be the issue.

most prominent from 1500 rpm when you lift off the throttle.

one of the band-aid fixes appears to be higher viscosity oil .... hummm ... something to think about.... not sure if this is a DIY job or not ...

thanks for the TSB #!

priced the VCT solenoid and verified the part number you have in your sig.

$63.42 each at the local ford dealer.

i think i'm going to get them. the 5w30 didn't do squat for the noise.

thanks for the tip! i would never had guessed that solenoids could cause the type of noise i've got.

went to the local ford dealer to get the updated VCT solenoids and the price was $63.42 each, just as he said. he had two so i bought them both.

i had just come from work and as he was telling me the total he noticed the logo on my work shirt. He looked it up and we get a 20% discount!

so he tagged on the discount and i walked out with two solenoids for right at $100.00!

not too often that you can get things cheaper at the dealer than online! i'll take the wins when i get them.

thanks again for the tip! i hope it fixes the noise, or at the very least keeps things from getting any worse.

disappointed .... albeit not entirely surprised.

new VCT solenoids made no difference, other than the $100 hole in my wallet. the old ones were original, as the new ones were decidedly different, but there was no change in the noise i've got going on. it sounds like the timing chains rattle when you lift off the gas at 1200-1500 rpm. still there, still just as bad. which may not be that bad, but i HATE engine noises as they never seem to get better over time, only worse.

i'll take solace in the fact that the solenoids should not be a problem going forward, but i have a feeling that sometime in the next couple years i'm going to get to replace the phasers.

oh well ... kind of wishing that ford would have just stuck with the 2v 5.4, or did the 3v in the same way they did the v10, and just not had VCT.
