I just looked at some BFG Baja 37" military tires. The tread on them is noticeably wider than the Goodyear MTs I have, though both are sized as 12.5" wide. I do suspect I will rub with the BFG tread. How bad, I don't know. I will have to test fit some after I put on the RSK and SD springs.

37x12.5x16.5 Used Hummer tires on a cheap set of steelies I had around. Had to trim the bumper a lil and they just barely rubbed the spring at full lock.

Stock height with just an Add-A-Leaf in the front.

Cause of accident was defective USED MILITARY HUMVEE TIRES, my son in law paid for that one. Don't even use them if your going to go on the street(maybe off road use only) MILITARY TIRES ARE NOT APPROVED FOR THE STREET, YOU WILL GET A TICKET FOR THEM. I got lucky had seat belt on.
The Goodyear Wrangler OZ tires ARE street legal .(DOT number and all)

Sounds like you need to lean how to drive, just like all those idiots with the Explorers "blow outs"

To the OP. I had a set on one of my trucks when I bought it. i HATED them. I would get stuck everywhere and constantly need 4wd. I GAVE them away and bought a 1/2 worn down set of M/T MTZs. Haven't used 4wd since

Perhaps the issue was they were the old bias 36" tires and were very old.

The newer Goodyear MTs are great tires for the street and wear like iron. The load rating and sidewall thickness is awesome.

The MTRs and Bajas are fantastic bargains on the used market. Like any other used tire they should be inspected and sound.

I think many folks put the HMMV tires on wheels that are too wide. The HMMV wheels are only 8.25 wide and bead locked. To put these on a 12" wheel with no safety bead is not wise. Keep the air above 30 PSI and on a suitable wheel and any of these tires are great.

Agreed, tho its perfectly safe to run a 12.5 tire in a 16.5x10 or a 16.5x12
I run 12.5 on my 12" Welds. Granted you wouldnt want to "air down" but thats not what 16.5 are for anyway, keep them properly inflated and their fine..On a related note tho, they do offer stauns for 16.5s...

I agree with you IF the pressure is kept up. These pretty much depend on air to hold them in place without beadlocks.

Heavy duty trucks have ran 16.5s forever with no troubles. The safety bead to me isn't an issue unless tires are leaky.

As soon as my wheels are blasted and painted MTRs are going on my truck. The weather isn't cooperating.

I realize this is a bit late, but the tires we run now are E-rated, since the M1151 is uparmored, and just about as heavy as my dually. Blow outs are common with them though. Just about every spare tire I've seen is just shredded junks of rubber. HWY speeds are no more than 55MPH, could be the gearing, but I've taken a HMMWV past 55 with no problems. IIRC, most of the tires we have are all re-treads here. I would be hesitant to buy them to use for on the road.

I don't understand why you would want them on your truck unless you were using them as an off-road tire only, and even then, they aren't that great for that, even with 4hi locked in.

The ones I see for sale and have purchased are not retreads. I can't believe Uncle Sugar would buy retreads.

Are the military retreads easy to identify?

Presumably they would be branded or marked somehow...

I have NEVER seen a retread in the 37" dia size used by the US GOV; I have however seen 37" retreads elsewhere.. I have no reason to believe they don't use recaps in some semi applications tho....

When I'm down there next time looking at em, I'll look around. Our mechs said they were retreads, and with their short life expectancy I don't disagree. Not to say all of them are though, some might be new.

Maybe they use different tires now, but whatever tire was the standard for the trucks and trailers and everything else used recaps.. The humvees use a fatter tire, and the bigger cargo trucks too. Not sure about those.
