1928 Rolls Hot Rod sells for 187,000. !

Tank-engined 1928 Rolls-Royce hot rod sells for $187,000 in Monterey | Hemmings Daily

As high as the transaction price was... it did not cover the cost of acquiring and building the car. (owner)

Beautiful work, ugly car. (IMO)

I'm more impressed with the Boss 429 that went for $401,500!

That's the problem when you build something unique for yourself, then expect, or hope the rest of the world will pay for it. It's amazing he got as much as he did. It does say the price includes selling fees, so the hammer price was probably closer to 150K. Still a ton of money.

You mean I won't be able to get $50K out of my stock truck when I'm done???!!!! Well there goes my retirement plans.

I used to get Rod & Custom magazine. They never told you how much people spent on the featured vehicles. Until one issue where the guy mentioned he blew by is $100,000 budget. I completely lost interest in the magazine after that.

How about this? Volvo 1800 ES - Bonhams Sale | Hagerty Articles

Price and sensibility do not correlate.

If you do it for the $$$$ it's not a hobby. We do it because we enjoy it and if you can make buck when you sell it that's all the better. I build for ME If you don't want it or like it that is fine.

My wife asked me the other day how much I expected to spend on the F-1 by the time I was done and what I thought it would be worth when finished. I said I'd probably spend $25-28K and it might be $15-18K when done. She wasn't impressed. When this topic comes up with friends I always ask them how much they expect to make when they sell their golf clubs. As 48Steel said, for most of us it's a hobby not an investment.

The golf clubs analogy is a good one. It's also like asking a hunter or fisherman how much money they saved catching their own meat. Right after they brag about the $3000 rifle they just bought. Or complain about the latest and greatest $150 lure they lost in a weed snag.

I could never imagine selling my truck, but it does have a family history.
But I could see me doing another car or truck someday. There is just something about starting up an engine after it has been sitting for many years. I think if you sell something and you break even. (Not counting any hours you work) you have done well and it's time well spent.

I always use the golf analogy myself. I have never tried playing it, but if anyone asked if I wanted to play, I'd politely answer that I'd love to, but I'm gonna be busy that day sticking pins in my eyes...... Somehow it's fine to hunt, boat, fish watch sports all weekend, even in per$on, and when WE don't get our investment back, it's a stupid hobby. I've heard it all. My wife likes the hobby. I'm always home and I actually do a certain amount of selling, and since I basically repair and fix, not restore, we get some spending money from it once in a while. First and foremost an awesome hobby! Oh, and that Rolls is pretty much exact opposite of what I build.

Indeed. .

The most money ive ever made on a vehicle was 200 bucks. Bought a 79 f-150 supercab for 500 bucks used it for work for about a week then found a rusthole in the floor the dude hid from me using plywood and carpet. Pressure washed the ****er changed its oil and sold it for 700. gotta love it. all my wrenchin i do is for my own pleasure ive lost all kinds of cash and every truck ive done up. but the life experiences and places ive gone and **** ive done in my fords is priceless. (not to mention all the money ive made using my trucks for work!)

I laugh everytime I read a for sale ad that uses "invested" as a verb about how they allocated project funds. You could most often trade "flushed", threw away, burned through or spent as just as appropriate verbs.

For the most part, these aren't investments.

What's the fun in writing a check? Building keeps your garage dirty and you get a sense of accomplishment each time you finish a project.
