It'll make a perfect wrecker. It's big enough and has the pto already. It's clean, straight and solid. For $1500 its a bargain. Even better if you could get it for less. If not, you haven't gotten hurt.
Just bought it for $1,400. Oklahoma only goes by the cab VIN, and I'm buying it from a reputable performance shop owner so no worries there. I'm liking how original this truck is, so I'm doing what I can not to molest it too much. It will be delivered in a couple days. I'm pumped!!!
Congrats! Great Buy. Keep us posted with plenty of pics.
What is this talk about it being made into a wrecker. I don't think the original poster said anything about that.... I would keep it as a flatbed dump.
What bolt pattern is that? That's my main reason for an axle swap. I'd love to make it 10 lug with some 24.5" wheels.
Bolt pattern is 6 x 7.25" circle. An F-450 would have a 10 x 7.25" so you might have luck having adapters made. At least up front since adapting modern steering is a challenge. On a rear axle swap you have lots of options. Stu
Edit - brain cramp. Yup, it's an F-500 with 5 x 8" pattern. My bad. Stu
Stu, is the '54 F500 not a 5 on 8" lug pattern? Am I reading too fast and missing something?
Anyway, I think that an original '54 Y-block 239 would be the "oddball" 239 with parts that are year-specific. It has small journals and some other nits and Frits that might make a true restoration a bit of a challenge.

Of course it's the oddball. I bought it, and I find that out, after the fact, EVERYTIME I buy something. Lol. I can't wait to see if the motor turns.
I haven't had too much difficulty finding parts for my 239. There are some that are a bear. The water pump is not to be found anywhere. I had mine rebuilt easily. If you do change out the motor please at least save that. You will make some 239 guys day someday.
