Brought home an OBS finally!
Well Hey guys
As most of you probably know I am a bricknose guy but my dad has been looking for a OBS truck we could fix up since that is his favorite style.
Well $200 later and we brought home a 1992 Ford F250 4x4 regular cab long bed 351W E4OD 4.10LS full floater D50TTB truck. The entire right side of it was side swept by a train luckily the train being to high to cause any damage to the frame, or drivetrain. It was the truck at our local paper mill that shut down about a year ago. This one got sold to a buddy and he no longer wants it. It came with the right fender and headlight to fix that part.
for the bed I plan to take the bed off the 89 F350 (not 89 F250) and put it on here since I am not sure what I am going to do just yet on the 89 F350.
The engine I was told is possibly seized but something tells me it isn't. Frankly at $200 for the truck and me having a lot of the parts to fix it I figure screw it I can get a 351 or rebuild this one and still be ahead.
Going to be interesting working on and OBS again since we got rid of our 93 F250 4x4.
Only got one question just yet:
When I decode the Vin it shows it is a F26? What the heck does that mean?
For this section that makes me now have:
88 F150 4x4 302 C6
89 F250 4x4 351 ZF5
89 F350 2wd 460 ZF5
91 F250 4x4 460 E4OD
92 F250 4x4 351 E4OD.

ya Tuesday I go to get the tittle from him he couldn't get it today because of the holiday weekend stuff. I trust him he is a good buddy. The same thing happened when he sold me the 89 F350 2wd.
Our plan is to get it running stick the flatbed on it and replace the fender. Fix the cab and put the low mount mirrors on it and give it to my dad for his birthday. He has always wanted an OBS truck.

Usually I would use something like that for a parts truck however my dad wants to fix it so I am game for it.
By the way got the home made rack and tail gate off last night talk about way better.
Also found quite a bit of tools that are really expensive that I was going to need sooner or later. (one is a 24" craftsman pipe wrench, a crow bar about the height of my brother's 34" tires, and a bunch of wood cutting tools.)

I pulled the starter off to find it was brand new and really I don't think it is bad. I have to go to O'rielly one of these days to get a part for my 88 and I will test it to be sure.
I also pulled the cover plate off and checked the torque convertor bolts and nothing was loose.
However I found a lot of scrapes in the flexplate on the side against the engine. What the heck could be in their causing that?
I am almost sure something is in their and I have to get it out to fix it.
According to my buddy he was driving down the road with it and it just stalled out had good oil pressure and everything but was making a scrapping noise. Then it wouldn't turn over like it was a dead battery he jumped it then all of a sudden it made a clank noise and he figured it was seized and towed it home.

Have any pictures of those scrape marks?
Directionality area of the plate with them number of em etc all would provide a clue to what might have created them. Scratch marks suffered while out or being installed or damage caused while in place or both perhaps.
Post couple pictures if you can.

If I get the chance I will post some pics.
It has scrape marks all the way from the top of the gear up 2-3" and they are all over the place no exact spot. It looks a lot like scratches when you go through a tree it leaves the scratches all scattered.
Gonna have to replace the starter anyways as the positive post broke off. Typical cheap Napa crap.

So the scrapes are NOT in a round pattern like they would be if something was rubbing on it as it rotated. That's probably just from somebody having worked on it before you. Anything that stopped the engine dead in it's tracks by running into the flexplate would have left deep gouges and probably shattered the damn thing.
How many times did you turn the engine over? No rough spots, felt like good compression, distributor turning along with the crank, no metal on the dipstick, no dents in the oil pan where it looks like the rods were trying to escape?
"Good" oil pressure don't mean crap if your buddy was using the stock gauge, just means it was over 5 PSI or whatever that gimmicky switch is set for. I ain't trying to be a pain here, I just hate to see you put a starter in and start cranking away and causing more damage if it ain't already done.

Don't worry you aren't being a pain. Personally I still don't think the starter is what was wrong my dad and brother does but something tells me it isn't that easy. I am not cranking it over until I know for sure what is making these scrape marks.
I turned it over once and it turned just as well as the engine in my Explorer and my Harley. Felt like good comperession but I might try putting my compression tester on it and see what it says.
No first thing I checked was metal on the dipstick and dents or holes in the oil pan as I had that happen to my 88 F150.
I know well about the stupid oil pressure gauges in these trucks that's why I am also worried about low oil pressure.
Their isn't any deep gouges in it nor do I see cracks but I haven't looked at it while turning it to be sure.
Because of the Y-pipe and it getting a bit dark out (I had to do this after school to get the pics) these aren't the best but I think it shows what I am talking about:
Through the starter hole:
These last few are through the access plate at the bottom of the Trans bell housing:
