What to look for in a V10

Iv only owned 7.3s but I came across a 99 V10 with only 37k miles that looks to be in really good condition and at a fair price. I have no idea what to look for power train wise though. Any things to look out for? Thanks!

99 v-10 with 37k miles, I would buy it and not worry about it. the major stuff will start to happen in about 50K more miles. buy it and change all the fluids, did I say change all the fluids...coolant, all gearboxes, power stearing, drian and refil brake fluid, tranny fluid, everything. take it for inspection and if it passes, drive on. me personally I would replace the battery so I would know my alternator is not going to burn out trying to keep a 100 month old battery charged.

The '99 is the only year Super Duty that didn't come with PI heads, so it makes less power than the newer years. I believe 275 HP if I remember right.

They are solid engines though, I would follow speakerfritz' recommendation and change out the fluids and it should make for a solid truck.

That is correct. They lack a little compared to the pi engines, but not a whole lot. I would also check the plugs too. The 99 heads lack the extra threads and I wouldn't trust 15 year old plugs.

That's one thing I would leave the heck alone. Factory plugs don't fly out of heads, it always seems to happen when people change them and fail to torque them properly.

The factory plugs are good for 100,000 miles, and that's how long I'd leave them in unless you start to get misfires.

I would just worry about corrosion after that amount of time. Most of the time these engines go through the plug life in just a couple of years. This one is 15 years old and barely a 1/3 of the way there. Even with the coating on the plugs I would still feel safer knowing they were clean and torqued properly.

Thanks so much for all of your input guys! It's a really nice truck; it's super clean. But I just don't think it will fit the needs of our business so I'm gonna pass on it.

Actually, factory plugs do fly out of heads. The factory plug on #4 cyl blew out at 62k miles on my '98 5.4 on the first owner. Since then I've replaced all plugs and caught 2 that had loosened up over time.

Not a huge concern, just listen for it. I've never had it happen on any of my V10s that i changed plugs on 2 of them.
