Dana 44 posi

Picked up a used Dana 44 posi with 4.88 gears. Was told it came out of a dana 44 front end in a 79 bronco. Set the pinion up and then go to put the posi unit in and when it is fully set in the housing the ring gear teeth barely touch the pinion teeth. Will a dana 44 rear posi be different? Do they make different dana 44 posi units. This is a ford dana unit. I am stumped. Any ideas?

Wasn't there a case (gear) split with D44s? Something like 3.92 and up was different.

There is a case change and I want to say 4.10 down/4.56 up (numerically)

There is also "thick" & "thin" ring gears.

Well, I'm not always right. But when I am, I am.

Back to the thread... I wonder what happened. Spec the incorrect parts?

I recommend getting the Dana "BOM" (Bill of Material) number off the axle housing and verifying what it is and what it was originally installed in . Refer to the Dana axle reference link in the Tech Thread Hyperlink Compilation sticky.

Incorrect parts is my guess.

Sounds as if a 4 series ring gear was mounted to a 3 series carrier...no go!

I'd bet the "Ford dana unit" (trac-loc) is for the all too common 3.50 ratio that was used in the F100/F150 4x4's, which is a 3 series carrier.

Thanks for all the replies but it is the correct carrier for the 488 but Bud Mud hit it right on the head. It was missing the spacer between the ring gear and carrier. I found one of those and it adjusted just right. Thanks again I knew someone would know
