1956 F250 frame question

My F250 has heavier springs than the F100. My question is the frame the same as a half ton in width, # of crossmembers, length?
Thanks.

Hello there and welcome to the forum. Its nice to see another three quarter tonner out there. As I am aware, the half and three quarter tons have the same width for the frames, but the three quarter tons are longer and have more cross members to account for the longer 8 foot bed. 1956 also had an option of an 8 foot box that I also believe had a similar frame to the three quarter ton. Someone else will chime in if I was incorrect anywhere or had missed something important. The people here are very friendly and knowledgeable and able to answer nearly any question you could ask and even some you didn't think to ask.

Thank for your reply! My bed is 6 1/2 feet long (6' bed?). My book shows a F100 wheelbase at 110" and F250 at 118". So would that make the frame wider?

Ok. Here goes my third attempt at posting here. Wheelbase is a measure of the center of one wheel axle to the center of the other axle, not hub to hub. This means that there is 8" more in LENGTH between wheels on the F250 plus whatever extra frame is on the back to make up for the rest of the 8 foot box. The frames are not any wider to my knowledge. If your truck truly is a 250 (VIN starts with F25) then it sounds like your truck has been modified to put on the other box. Likely the frame was cut to shorten it and make the box fit on it. Do you have any pictures of the box, and, if so, can you upload some to this site so we can see if the box is homemade and what was done to the frame?

The width is the same just the length is different.
Here is a link to some frame dimensions.

53 to 56 had the same frame.
So do you know anything about the addition of front discs? Different rims front to back could be a pain, but only if you need a spare.

Almost but not quite. 55, 56 had 4" longer rear springs than the 53, 54. The frames interchange as long as you use the proper length springs that match the frame.

Bmann, I think you might be mixing your specs. Wheelbase is the distance between the center of the front wheel to the center of the rear wheel. it has nothing to do with frame width. 53-56 F100 with 6.5' bed had 110" wheelbase, F100, 250, 350 with 8' bed had 118" wheelbase. The 118" WB frame is longer from the rear of the cab to the rear spring mount and behind the rear spring mount to the end of the frame than the 110" WB frame otherwise the frames are the same. A number of people have shortened a 118" frame to match a 110" one to use the shorter bed.

There are 8 lug options for disc brakes on these old trucks. There is a company that makes a conversion kit with 8 lugs, I cant find the name now of course, and there was a guy who did his own disc front conversion for an f250 that looked more robust and just overall better, and cheaper than a drop in kit. Just requires some welding and seemingly pretty basic fabricating. I'm trying to keep the 8 lug wheels on my truck so that's my priority but I have no idea on what your intentions are so just do what you want with it! Its your truck after all!

Shoot, there was even a thread on this just recently. But I did learn something new here. I thought it was just the 56 that was different. Definitely something to put in the memory banks.

I have a link saved on my PC. My daughters kicked me off to watch Netflix. I will look it up later. Of course we are going a ways beyond the initial question, but it's good info to know. Even if you don't plan on changing your setup. I don't plan on doing the disc conversion, but it's good to have in your back pocket.

Found the link for the 8 lug disc kit http://www.tsmmfg.com/1853.html they also have some rear disc kits as well. Well guys, now that we've both introduced the idea of disc brakes AND given some solutions, I think its time we hear from the OP and I vote that he gives us some pictures!

Mid-Fifty catalogs used to show the different spring lengths for those pickups, (still do?), and can be a useful source of info for other things, too. I have no affiliation with Mid-Fifty, for the record.

The chassis is the same, but different, as Ax said, and the F250 bed is 8ft, so the rear overhang is longer than just the 8" WB difference, thus a 6.5 ft bed swap is easier than cutting down the F250 bed.

But the frame itself is not wider, correct? I think the questions were concerning the frame, and since the OP has not replied in a while, we're all just going off on our own topic right now.

Can't get a good picture of the rear of the frame because the add on bumper covers that area. I'll see if theres a work around.

Don't know about the fronts - they were there when I got the truck.
