The "socket" or "key" slips on the end of the rod that is used to crank the spare down. One time on mine I forgot to put the key on the end of the rod and stuck it in and it did lower the jack.
Maybe if you tape a 3/8" drive socket or something with the end filled with clay on the end of the rod.(spray some oil on the end of the clay to prevent sticking) Stick the rod in then you could get an imprint as to what the key design looks like. A master kit is made for mechanic shops but it is pricey.
I swear the dealers must sell the owners manuals and keys. I just don't buy that practically every used vehicle you buy is missing the spare key and manual.

there are different patterns for this ...an idea that makes it harder for a would be theif to steel the tire if he had 1 key. I read somewhere there are 16 possible patterns for a 2006 and later superduty. disreguard all the post that say you can use a #10 sears extraction socket or a 6 sided 9/16 socket....that's for the pre-2005 stuff.
best way is to cut the cable tip off while the wheel is supported. after the wheel is out...pry off the patteren bolt and you can use the regular tire kit to crank it down.
repaire the cable while the cable is unwound by reassembling everything, add a thick washer to cover the spring, pas the cable thru the washer and a nut, weld the nut to the cable.
