The flasher appears to have "6v" printed on it, so it needs to be replaced.

Before I go through all of this.... how can I tell what generator I have?

Get the numbers off it. I think the voltage is even stamped on them.

Those are interesting radiator hoses.

The rheostat is in the light switch....

My early 50 has the toggle switch to turn the dash lights on and off, I still don't understand why, but it works, as far as I'm concerned it will never be turned off.
