What type of engine cleaner to use?

I have a Jasper engine on my 92 F150. It only has 90,000 miles on it so it shouldn't be burning oil. The problem was I needed to replace the timing chain cover and so it leaked about 2 quarts/week for 5 months or so before I got it fixed. I used cheaper oil instead of the Mobile One synthetic oil I have always used during this time.
So after I fixed the timing chain and replaced all the valve cover seals I was surprised to see it was still using a quart of oil/week with every thing sealed up tight as a drum and no oil leaks whatsoever. I was using good Mobile One 30 weight synthetic oil in the engine.

My mechanic said because I used cheaper oil, I probably gummed up the piston and oil rings so that oil was being blown past the rings. He said I needed to get a engine cleaner to clean up the gummed rings.

So what type of engine cleaner should I use?

Regards,
Larry

Well you don't want to use an 'engine flush'.

I have had good luck with Rislone in the yellow bottle. This used to be a local company (now owned by Radiator Specialties) and I've used it on and off for 40 years. I would imagine the formulas has changed a bit over the years. I use it in my high mileage and neglected Ram 1500 two years ago and it cleared up a few sticky lifters and seems to have lessened the oil consumption.

There is no magic potion...

I added a quart of Lucas Oil Treatment to the engine and it sure slowed down the oil consumption to almost nothing. Does this change the diagnose? Maybe the gummed up rings are being cleaned by this product. Don't know what to think.

Oh, my mechanic said there was a new product out that is only about 2 months old and he said it produced excellent results. He didn't say the name. I am waiting for his supplier to fill his order so I can get the engine cleaned. I imagine he doesn't want to tell me the name so I don't go out and buy the product to do the job myself.

Does anybody know the name of this new product?

Regards,
Larry

I used Lucas in my OTR diesels for ten years. You have to understand it's primarily a viscosity index improver with some anti-wear additives in it. I used it to extend my oil drain intervals (along with a good oil sampling program).

It will help with oil consumption issues.

Yeah, I know it's a viscosity improver

Yeah, Re: Lucas. I do know. Wish I could find out what the other product was.

i think it is time to find a new mechanic.
the reason the lucas slowed down the leak is because it thickened up the oil.

you need to find where it is leaking from first.

I've already stated there are no oil leaks. It's sealed tight as a drum now that everything was repaired/ sealed up.

It's using oil not leaking oil.

you still need to find a new mechanic. blow by will not be "cured" by engine cleaner.
if your rings are bad enough to let it burn oil, the only thing that will fix it is rebuilding or replacing the engine.

Will change the oil and see if it still consumes oil

I haven't consumed any oil at all since I used Lucas Oil stabilizer. It's almost time to change the oil again so if I put in just regular synthetic oil and it doesn't consume then I'll consider the problem fixed whatever it was.

There was never any smoke out the pipes either. Seems strange.

Engine runs fine and I can easily reach top speed of 85++mph

Larry
