2012 F150 XLT Ecoboost with 90k

We just sold our 04 Supercrew that was rusting out from underneath itself. I was unsure of what to get next until I drove this 2012 F140 XLT supercrew with the ecoboost. It is in fantastic shape and drive great. It does have 90k on its odometer and I wasn't sure if that should be of any real concern. It was a one owner trade in and you would never tell the mileage by looking at it. The dealer quoted me $24k and some change out the door....trade in value of the truck with the extra options is around $22k. I averaged 5k miles per year for the 5 years I owned my 04 so I don't drive real far. I also tow a 20' ultra lite camper which may get upgraded to a 24' ultra lite in a few years.

I just didn't know if I should be concerned about the high mileage with my driving habits and not driving very much. Do these motors have any maintenance issues? Everything I've read seems to be good....this story really piqued my interest. https://www.facebook.com/notes/muscl...e/489211124997

I'd appreciate any comments. Thank you.

I would be willing to pay that price if the dealer were to perform the 100K mile and 150K mile maintenance services as prescribed by the owners guide before taking delivery of the truck.

Otherwise, you'll be in for a plug change, coolant flush and belt change at 100K and trans flush / front and rear diff oil changes at 150K.

miles don't seem to hurt vehicles anymore. a 2012 with 90k is a truck that spent most of it's time traveling down the road at highway speed. anyone that can put 30k on a vehicle in a year doesn't do it by driving it around town in stop and go traffic.

usually these types of miles are put on one of a couple ways. rental fleets being one, and traveling sales people being another. being that you said it was a local trade, i'd guess the later.

if you plan to tow, make sure it has the factory towing package at a minimum. check your gear shifter for a "M" position and a +/- toggle switch on the shifter handle ... those will be a tell tale sign for you.

for me, no towing package would be a deal breaker. anyone can put a hitch on for you, and you can even get it wired up correctly for a cost. but without the factory towing package you won't get the auxiliary transmission cooler or the upgraded radiator. if you weren't planning to tow, then it wouldn't matter, but you know you will.

at the rate you drive, that vehicle will have 150k in another 10 years .... you just all your miles up front.

price is area dependant. around here, that truck is 10k less than new. not many used 2012's for sale here (couldn't find any) so that's another way to look at prices perhaps. 5k depreciation per year, sounds like it could be a good deal.

Consider that end of year closeouts can be $10-12,000 off sticker price.
Seems to generally be XLTs with 5.0s.
For the same price you're talking, you might find a new truck with a sticker in the
mid 30s.

In researching trucks a few years ago, I found a Dodge dealer in the Boise area who's prices on the Internet for his trucks, were all listed at $8-13,000
below sticker price. This was less then what other dealers were asking for
1-2 year old used trucks.

In other words, the truck you're talking about may have sold for not much
more then what they're asking for it now.

Agree, sometimes you can buy brand nwe for pretty much the same price as lightly used trucks.

agree with last few posts.. I got a new truck for a little more than that last year.. almost 12k off sticker price. I was planning on buying a used truck, but for a couple grand extra I have a new truck AND piece of mind. You also have the added benefit of the newly remodeled 15's coming out, I bet you can get some great deals this fall..

I would not be concerned about the miles. I followed the release of the EcoBoost very close since I was very interested in purchasing one. I went to a couple Ford driving events that featured the 2011 F150's before they were made available to the public. At those events we had access to Ford engineers and test drivers. I am an engineer and was impressed with the design & testing of the vehicle. It seemed over the top.

You should look at left over 2014’s in you due diligence. I purchased an 2012 when the 2013's were coming out. The incentives were very aggressive, including .09% financing. When it was all said and done the new 2012 cost me less per month than the used 2011 I almost bought. If you do go with the used truck, I do agree with the post above. You should at least get them to do any of the services you can.
