I wouldn't consider it a new engine. It's a improvement on an already proven engine.

It's a beast. I wouldn't think twice about picking one up. This is how it should have been when introduced in 2011.

As far as what has changed; there are a lot of topics/articles on this as it has been beaten to death. Search on here and you will find your answers. But in short, transmission changes (smooth as butter), turbo changes (no surging, matched really well, beast mode for stock), fuel system changes, and exhaust brake changes (works great) to name a few.

(On paper and in pics) a more reliable turbo. Also increased output ( so they say) HPFP and injectors. Engine is pretty much the same. Added manually operated exhaust brake and beefed up transmission .

 

There are still some 2014s on the lots. In your opinion, is the deal I'll get on the 2014s worth skipping the improvements in the 2015?

 

There is not a thing wrong with the 14s so if the deal agrees with your finances better, then that is a good route to take. If you have the coin, I would get a 15 for all the improvements...

I wouldn't hesitate to buy another gen 1 if the savings are there. Mine has been an awesome truck so far.

 

It's either '14 or nothing if you stick to your guns. '15 is an update, '16 supposed to be a new truck, so you're looking at '17 or later.

I know the '16 may not be a driveline change but still, supposed to be a major design break like '07-'8 and '10-'11. I dunno how different the engine/trans will be though.

 

Had a great run in my 2011 with few problems. The math worked out so I got a 2015...

Everyone is also forgetting the fuel HPFP changes.

Basically they took a really good truck and made some changes based on knowledge gained from the other trucks in the fleet. IMHO, 2015 is a more refined/tuned truck that the 2011 was - and I am sure a 2014 is more refined in certain way that my 2011 was.

What I hope that they change for the new 2016 trucks is the radiator... That to me, is still a remaining achille's heal for these trucks. Maybe Ford should contract with Mishimoto to build their radiators... This plastic end cap radiator seems (at least to us enthusiasts) to have too high a failure rate.
