97 F250 Check engine light and flashing Over drive light
I recently purchased a 97 F250 7.3L turbo diesel 2WD Dually Automatic with 160K, I am getting Check engine light with flashing OD light with let of the gas panel to stop a light and they go out when I step on the gas. but it does not happen all the time. When by a local diesel truck shop and ask them what it could be, there answer was you need a transmission and we do it for $4500.
Is there something I can check, change before jumping on replacing the transmission.
Fluid levels are good.
Thanks

Exactly what Todd said. how's the trans shifting? Does it feel normal? I have had this happen to me, but it was IVS and TPS related when I checked the codes. You may not need a new trans at all. You need to get the codes checked before you do anything.

I wouldn't trust them or him if that was his first "off the cuff" response. I'd move on and try to find someone that knows these trucks.

Forgot to mention, it does shift hard after the CEL and OD light comes on if I accelerate to fast, but most of the time it shift normal, and on occasion it seems to shift to fast.
This is my first diesel, I have all ways had an f150 never had issue like this.
I did find that the third tail light was burnt out, replace the bulb and found that the plug was burnt, replacing it this weekend.
Thanks for the help.

Finally got my F250 in to have code read, they found no codes but they did find that the gas pedal was not reading correct, was reading 9% with nobody touching it and to the floor it was only reading 68% pedal movement. They suggested replacing the pedal assembly. found one at a local junk yard for $45, installed it, truck run great no CEL or OD light. The diagnostic was free.

I had the same thing happen to me a couple years back. The OD light would flash and it would feel like I was braking while accelerating...it would lose a couple hundred RPM when doing this. The only code I got was saying I had a short in a wiring harness, after running the harness and finding nothing wrong I pulled the tranny pan off. It turned out to be the solenoid block, you can pull the block off easily with out pulling anything else apart but for the gasket you have to cut the full gasket down to just the solenoid block side. It ended the problem for good....
