Bumping an old thread. My edge insight is telling me my error codes are P242A and P242D. Truck runs fine, just a check engine light, no limp mode, I can clear the codes and the check engine light with my edge but it comes back on next time I start the truck. A little bit of on line research says its a bad egt sensor. 2 questions, first wouldn't this be a warranty item? truck has 84k, second how hard is it to replace a sensor myself?

It takes about 10 minutes to change them IF you can get them to break loose. You may have to use a little heat to get them loose, others have stripped them out and had to take the exhaust out, drill them out and re-tap them. Use a "Flare" or line wrench to take them out. Lots of us have taken the sensors loose and put anti-seize on the threads to keep this from happening. As far as the warranty, what year is your truck? I honestly don't remember if they are covered to 100k or not. Scott(Senix) can tell you.

Not a warranty item (only 36/36).

You would think it would be an emissions warranty item.

It is a little hard to swallow that an EPA mandated sensor is not considered an emissions warranty item.

Guess that makes it an "entitled part", it's entitled to your wallet and not that of Ford.

Yeah, you would think it is a powertrain part of the warranty as well and it is not.

I would hold on to these if I were you. First take note of the original date that this thread started. Then notice that it was recently pulled from the archive files.

While the demand for the part has not diminished, the dealer parts inventory has recovered.

Worse case would be that you found yourself out in the boonies and one failed. And the only Ford dealer around didn't keep the part in inventory so it would be a 2+ day wait for the part to arrive.

I keep a supply of these in my truck, not that I plan on needing one. But then I also carry a spare tire for the same reason.

I don't think the sensor is mandated. they are measurements of the RESULTS of the emissions controls.. HOW that is implemented is up to the manufacturer.

now, if they said, you must use 'these' parts.. that would be mandated.

UPDATE, First of all with the latest reflash the truck will no longer go into shut down mode when one of these EGT sensors fails. It will simply display a check engine light. I was pulling my fiver 300 miles from home when this happened and my truck ran fine. That's a big relief knowing you can do the repair at your convenience in a safe location. Second, there was a letter issued that states Ford will cover the sensors for 8 years/80,000 miles whichever comes first. In addition they will cover it regardless of mileage until Nov 30th, 2015. They will also reimburse you if paid to have it done. Mine is a 2011 with 84k so I will be taking in and find out what they say, I will also be buying a spare sensor. You can read about the letter here.

So which one failed for you? Only one (EGT 13) will or used to cause the shutdown.

P242A and P242D is supposed to be sensor 13, according to what I've found online.

I thought I had read in one of these threads that the 2015's and up now have two sensors at the EGT13 or EGT14 location? Or am I dreaming that? I assumed that was for redundancy, so that no one is stranded for a failed sensor. one fails, CEL, both fail(unlikely), truck shuts down.

There is an additional sensor in the 2015 but it is farther downstream.
