Info needed about rearends

Hey guys, I need some info on this generation 9" axles. Specifically 1964.

There's one on Craigslist that I'm thinking about buying, but the seller doesn't seem to know much about it.

What gear ratios were most common?
What was the overall width? Spring width?

If its the same width as the axle that was under the 67-72 trucks then that's great, cuz that's what I need it for. If it's likely to have lower gears, like 3.70. 3.90 4.10 that's even better, cuz I need a set of those too.

Do you need the whole housing or just the pumpkin? What did the 9" come out of, a car or truck? If you want a posi look for 31 spline axle's. there are different housing sizes and spring widths. conventional rears use a 28 spline tapered axle. Car rears will have a higher ratio 3.25, 300, 278. Look for a 4X4 9", it may be a posi be high geared and it will bolt right in.
Cheers

I need the whole housing for my 68 pickup trailer, I need the center section/ gears for my 71 if they are the right ratio.

It's under a 64 pickup frame. I don't know if it was 2wd or 4wd or what engine was there.

You want to make sure if it has 31 or 28 spline axles. Measure the spring width also.

My 71 has 28spline. What this one has doesn't really matter to me. If it's 28 great, if it's 31 no big deal. All I need is a rolling axle and I may harvest the ring and pinion if they are right.

Should be bolt hole swap. spline count should be same, ratios can vary from 4.11+ down to 2.75 although most trucks were in the 3s.

Mr Wilson (ND) can offer better detail.

Same idea just different...

I took a 351C and tranny out of a 1972 1/2 Ranchero and put it in my 1961 Ford Uni...used the original rear-end (believed to be 4:11)! It runs great but lacks take off power...needs a different gear ratio!! I'm new on here...I'm still trying to figure out how to post a picture to my profile...hahaha

Lacking power with a 4.11???? If you think it's lacking power then it's not a 4.11.

The '64 housing possibly can literally "bolt in" but it will not be right for the '68. The shock mounts are different.

Back to the top with this one.

So the general consensus is that a 64 housing SHOULD bolt up under a 68 frame/springs without a problem other than the shocks and piddley stuff like that right?

I'm probably going to buy this axle, if nothing else just for the third member. But it would be real nice if I could kill 2 birds with one stone and have it fit my trailer too.

1961 Ford rearend...

Sorry C4...my terminology was wrong...I think I meant top end, because my motor has to work too hard to keep a 65 to 70 mph on the highway. I've now been told that it's probably a 3.73, but have not officially found out for myself. I'm thinking I might need a 3.25 now...does that sound right??

If you want top end speed with lower rpm, you would need a 3.25.

If you want acceleration and power, with a loss in top speed, you need 4.11.

9" Limited Slip introduced in 1959, but it was not available in F100's until 1968.

1959/67 F100's: If Limited Slip was ordered, Ford installed Dana rear axles, either the Dana 44 (1959/67), or the Dana 60.2 (1963/66) or the Dana 60.3 (1966/67).

The 60.2 & 60.3 are not Dana 60's, which were only installed in F250's.

B7TZ-4234-A .. 9" Axle Shaft-28 splines: 1957/67 F100.

C8TZ-4234-A .. 9" Axle Shaft-28 splines: 1968/72 F100.

C8TZ-4234-B .. 9" Axle Shaft-31 splines-Use with 9/3/8" ring gear & Traction-Lok.

9 vs 9 3/8: Only 5 parts are the same, housing gasket, pinion seal, pilot bearing retainer, one pinion bearing & cup. EVERYTHING else is different!

1957/64 F100: Common 9" ratios were 3.25 - 3.70 - 3.89 - 4.11.

1965/67 F100: Common 9 ratios: Add 3.00 & 3.50 to above. 3.00 & 3.25 were usually only installed with A/T.

F100 9" axle shafts are the same right & left. Passenger Car, Bronco & Econoline 9" axle shafts are right and left specific.

Swap the center chunk, keep the larger brakes, as long as it is 28 ct spline, the chunk is all you need to change if your current axles and housing is good.

I mistakenly posted this on another thread.

This article is very useful about the 9" rears.
Hemming's Motor News: Ford 9-inch differentials | Hemmings Motor News

There is also a lot of info on the Mustang sites also.

Hope this helps.
