Hey guys. I have a 76 f600 that carries my well rig. It has a 361
smokes. I found a6.9 new diesel motor military surplus. I would like to convert it to this motor. Here is the truck info that Bill got for me. What bell housing am i going to need etc. driving speed is not an issue as I only drive it 20 miles or so from job to job. Thanks Steve
F61 = F600 2WD (gas).

E = 361 2V or 4V FT Engine.

V = Kentucky Truck Assembly Plant.

B00675 = 1976.

194" Wheelbase.

M = Wimbledon White.

F615 = F600 2WD (gas), 23,000 lbs. GVWR

DB8: DB = Medium Blue Vinyl / 8 = 81B Custom Cab.

A = New Process 435 4 Speed Manual Transmission.

E2N: E2 = Eaton model 16244 Two Speed Rear Axle / 6.17/8.58 / 17,500 lbs. Rear Axle Capacity // N = Ford 9,000 lb. Capacity Front Axle with P/S

23,000 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.

The diesel bell is specific to diesel motors only. Some have made the 2 holes that don't line up a bit bigger on gas transmissions to get it to mount, that would be your discretion to do or not. There is also no current provision for a front mount, so you would have to devise a mounting setup for one. There are some mounted in medium duty trucks in the 90's, so there will possibly be a factory mount that can be adapted, or build your own. I don't know for sure if a bell from a T19 will swap with the 435, but it is possible. None of the diesels had mechanical linkage to the clutch, but they do use a fork.

That said, I would like to do the same eventually with my 71 F600. Being a military surplus, it is possible that motor is coming from a medium duty truck. As such, you may have to get a different adapter plate to get the automotive style bell adapter plate, as it will likely have an SAE bell adapter on it now.

"Some have made the 2 holes that don't line up a bit bigger on gas transmissions to mount...."

That might work with oil burner to 460, but not FE/FT. Check the difference between the 460 and the FE/FT:

Forum Faqs

The NP435 in the OP's truck will have a larger input shaft than those found in pickups. It may still work, depending on the size of the pilot busing or bearing. Some checking is in order there, as well as checking the length of the input shaft. As said, a clutch bell from a T19 will bolt up the trans IF the input shaft can be made to match up. You may need some mix and match on the clutch disc also, as the input splines are bigger.

I neglected to mention I was referring to 460/351m/400 bell... I know the FE bell won't fit, at all, to anything but an FE/FT. They are closer to a Chrysler bell, with the round shape.

I have seen mention of the NP 435 being used on some IDI conversions using the T19 bell, but I can't outright validate that statement.

Look at an International S1600 or school bus with a 6.9 or 7.3 from 83 to 94. It will have the correct style 3 point mount that can be adapted to your truck.

I'd bet that your 6.9 surplus engine is actually trimmed as a medium truck version, as International sold thousands of 6.9 and 7.3 medium trucks to the military as support vehicles.

Another forum member posted a thread about installing a 6.9 or 7.3 IDI in his mid '60's F600. Maybe you can find it if you search this forum.
