Solenoid question.

Solenoid question.
I think I finally have the fuel pump situated. Now here is the problem. The po had ran a red wire 6ga wire as the ground and a 4ga black as the hot wire. Ran fine but bugged me, because I knew i would got to boost it some day and hook the cables up wrong. So I changed the hot and ground around, now I when I try to start the truck the solenoid starts smoking. I put everything back the way it was. It is a '86 with 460 4spd. I have three wires and the hot batt wire on the same terminal.

When you switched it back to the way is was first connected, did that fix the problem? Does truck start okay now? If so, it may be that one of those wires is not a ground as you thought.
Does the red (ground) wire come off the solenoid mounting bolt or fender and go to a ground location on the engine?
Explain where the wires go and how/what they attach to on the solenoid -or post a photo of the connections.

I'm confused. You said the wires were 6 gauge and 4 gauge. That is like battery cable size. But now you are saying there is an in-line fuse in both wires. Maybe you meant 14 and 16 gauge wire (16 ga. is more like thin speaker wire).
But I think your issue is that you mistook one of the wires as a ground when they are both hot. No one would put a fuse in a ground wire.
it is normal to have a couple of smaller gauge wires coming of the solenoid terminal where the positive battery cable connects.
