my 2010 did the same thing. only solution I found was a cover by wheelskins.com. I've had it on for about 2 years and it still looks as good as the day I bought it. Very good quality and fit.

I've found a few others on here that have had the same issue. All of the trucks we have at work, mostly fords, have the same problem. i attributed it to me being a mechanic and the oil from my hands degrading the coating on the wheel.

This is why I have never cared for a leather wrapped steering wheel.

I don't think the OP has a leather wrapped steering wheel, or was that in reference to the aftermarket leather steering wheel covers? My wife's 2011 Kia Sorento had a leather steering wheel and it held up extremely well, with no sign of wear when we got rid of it 2 months ago.

I thought when he said it was losing the outer coating, that it meant the leather was peeling. I could be wrong though. Every truck I've had with a leather wrapped steering wheel has peeled. My 2004 XLT had a urethane steering wheel, and I wish my 2012 did because I think it's only a matter of time before it peels.

my '96 and '02 trucks w/ leather wrapped wheels look and feel great, only slightly showing wear where i keep my hand at the 12'oclock area. I think it really depends on how you hold the wheel, what you have on your hands constantly..ect. I also regularly clean and condition the seats and wheels in both.

my '11 wheel and seats look brand new.

I believe that is a key step in the newer trucks. Leather wrapped wheel or not. I know at least for me I a high acid content in my skin, and that just eats away at everything I touch on a daily basis. That is except for the hard plastic steering wheels and shift ***** in my old trucks.

This is a urethane wheel. Ford says to buy a cover.
I don't think this lasted long enough.
