Machine Work Pricing
Hello Fellows,
So I've been following Pickachu's "The Carnage has Begun" thread and noticed a few people were amazed at what it cost him for his machine work. I might be in need of some machine work myself here soon and wanted to post a few numbers that I was quoted for here in the Denver area. The shop I was referred to is a pretty well known shop in the drag racing arena and from what I'm told has a good reputation.
Basic machine work for the lower end.
> prep block- standard stuff (clean, hot dip etc.)
> hone cylinders
> polish crank,cam
>check all bearing caps for proper size and check thrust.
> install cam bearing
cost would be approx. $700.00 to 800.00
If a sleeve was needed, that would be an additional $250.00 per sleeve.
Completely go through heads and rebuild. Heads would be made ready
to install on block, $600.00 to $700.00
So for roughly the basic overhaul it would run from $1,300 to $1,400 for machine work.
Average cost, good,bad?

Sounds pretty average to me, though the block machining is a bit on the high side.
When I was building my engine, I was right at $950 for machining my block (bored .030 over and sleeves in #7 and #8). However the heads were quoted at $1200. Though to be fair, both were cracked thanks to the PO.
Fortunately, I nabbed a pair of eBay remans for $330 a pop. Can't touch them for those prices anymore though.
