What is a "Factory Rebuilt" engine?

This just kind of dropped in my lap. Not really looking for another truck, but passed by this one and had to stop. It's a '90 F250 with a 351. Couldn't get inside the truck, but called the guy. He said the engine was a Factory Rebuild done at the factory and not by some hole-in-the-wall mechanic (my apologies to all hole-in-the-wall mechanics!). The "new" engine only has 20-30,000 miles on it. Has a 4speed manual trans, 140,000 on the truck. Interior is immaculate. Some under-carriage rust and not sure what rear end it has. Guy wants just under 4 g's for it. Some pics:

If it was 4 wheel drive then maybe it'd be worth it. I would just assume the motor has 140k miles on it unless you can actually verify that it was rebuilt.

The rust on that brake line looks a little scary though.

I was going to explain it, but it's easier for you to go read it. Here's the link:

Ford Remanufactured Gas Engines | The Official Ford Parts Site | FordParts.com

That being said, OEM is OEM They have minimum and maximum tolerances for ALL of their parts. So if a part is replaced and it's already at the Max tolerance then it'll be a short lived part. Sometimes it's better to build an engine yourself with quality parts that you buy than it is to let the factory rebuild it for you.

The pics are pretty good but with the amount of rust under the bottom and the delam on the frame I'd be leery about pay $4K for it.

If it was factory rebuilt by Ford, there should be a gold sticker on the valve cover, saying "Rebuilt by Ford" or something to the extent. My '90 302 had that sticker on the driver valve cover and the transmission.

And looking at the pics, Even if 4wd, no more than $2500 and I'm really not even wanting to start there. $2000 is more reasonable.

"Factory" could be from any large rebuilder… Marshall, Jasper, etc. although one could xpect the engine came thru Ford.

Ford still sells 'remanufactured' engines thru their dealer network. Years ago there were many independent rebuilders who did engines for Ford… not sure who does them today. Are they better? better than what? I have two shops that have done race engine work for me in the last several years and they do as good a job, or better, than anyone.

A "factory" rebuild is by FORD and no one else.

Also, that truck is not worth more than $1000 with the ROT it has

My truck has a FORD remanfactured engine in it. However it is just the long block so there is no sticker on it anywhere stating it's a rebuild. However I have all the paperwork from when it was done so I know it has a rebuild.

But like Brad said. As soon as I saw the rot holes in the floor board I went strait to $1k... It simply isn't work more than that with the body rot.

Like Matt said I would be more scared of the rusted brake lines then the other stuff. To me that truck isn't worth even $1K. Looks like it needs a whole new body and a lot of drivetrain parts.

Aside from the brake line, the floor near the front cab mount doesn't look too good. How about the other side, rear cab mounts, cross members, rear spring hangers, and shock mounts??

WEhat brad sed, about 1k.

you will have ALOT of bodywork on it (i knwo this, mine was about that condition on the crewcab, had to malke all new A, B and C pillars, corners an dbody mounts.) all new brake lines, all new bushings most likely.
and its 2x4, single cab, gasser.

1k TOPS.

just saw your in livonia, my buddy actually stopped and looked at that truck as well as he knows I have a bricknose. This was almost 2 months ago, without seeing it i laughed when he said guy wants 4k for a 2wd single cab gasser.

OK, so all of you that price this at $1000 - let me ask you this: If this was your truck, you're telling me you would be fine selling it for $1000? I agree it's not worth $4000, but I always thought any vehicle that runs well is worth at least $1000. Even if you just parted it out, it would be worth more than that. Rust free 8-foot bed is worth $500 around here. The tires (per the owner, if you believe him) were $1200 new, and only 1200 miles ago. Those two items alone are worth $1000 - not even adding in what apparently is a pretty good engine having been rebuilt by Ford. You guys know ALOT more about these trucks than I do, but it seems to me that we always tend to over value our rigs, but under value rigs we might want to buy!!

1k, $1,500 if you really want it.
That's a lot of cleaning, cutting, welding, sealing, filling, prepping, painting, -and then- you get to put it all back together so you can drive it.

If you're looking for a full time project to keep you busy into the dead of winter, you've found it.

Sure you could part it, and you could live with it spread all over your yard for months looking for buyers.

I won't say what I think of the sellers unrealistic expectations.
