Is this too much trailer for my truck?

I have a 2003 f250 crew cab short bed with the mods in my sig plus airbags.

I looked at a 28' long hallmark gooseneck today. It weighs about 6,400 empty.

I need to fill it with 10,000lbs of ammo and drive it 1200 miles once or twice a month through a lot of hills.

Empty, the trailer would place approx 1720 pounds on my rear axle. Anyone know the weight limit?

I would be hauling about 17,500lbs including load out gear, ammo, fuel, etc.

Opinions?

In my opinion that is too much weight to tow that often for that distance. An F-450 or F-550 would be a better choice since they have much larger brakes and a gear ratio more suited for that sort of weight.

I would think you're too heavy. Our truck are rated at I believe 12,500 max for conventional towing & 13,200 for fifth wheel. It may pull it but you have to be able to stop it as well.

Recipe.

For.

Disaster.

It's probably doable, yes. There's even a small chance you could find a document that implies it's legal if you squint just right. But is it wise? No. Do I want to be on the same road with you? No.

If the Fed would stop effing with the 2nd amendment this cargo would be on common carriers, safer and cheaper.

Sorry for the rant. My two cents is cut the load in half with less trailer and do the trip twice as often. Get solid info on permits for that cargo in every state you go across.

And if a box or two of 30-30 falls off the trailer PM me.

Alright.......I'll ask......heck I shoot a lot during the season.....but damn dude what is with all that ammo? That is like 640 flats of shotgun shells......

I also think you will be pretty damn heavy, especially to do that multiple times. The truck might make it a few times but just because it can doesn't mean it is a good idea necessarily.

Either way, be safe.

P.S. If a flat of 16ga #7.5s fall off the rig next to that box of 30-30.....give me a buzz.....

I'm guessing he's doing gun shows selling ammo. I'm looking at things from a slightly different angle...You're talking about nearly 23,000 GVW and I'm going to venture a guess on a two axle trailer. That comes to almost 6000 lbs per axle. Evenly distributed that puts 12,000 on your truck alone, which is rated for what, 8000, 8800 lbs? I'm with aawlberninf350 on the recipe for disaster. Reminds me of the tires I blew and bought back in my younger days. I'm guessing that a brake or tire fire is not something you'd be interested with that load.

Yes it will pull it but I don't think you be safe or happy with how it tows. I have towed 16000 from the bumper and I was glad it was slow and not fair.
Know the 550 with 22000 was fine pulled good stopped fast much nicer to drive

Thanks for your input guys. I started a business delivering ammo to rural communities in Alaska. It was been incredibly successful. I have outgrown the 22' bumper pull I've been renting.

I'd like to run my truck for as long as I can. Think I will pick up a 10k rated bumper pull and use it until I have a smaller gooseneck built to my specs.

It sounds like you need a C-130 and some parachute drops. Seriously though it sounds like a single axle tractor and a drop deck trailer would be in order. And if you're doing 1200 miles in AK I'd like to hear more. It's what, 400 from Anchorage to Fairbanks? Where's the other 800 going?

The 350 and trailer (combined) can total up to 20,000 pounds, and that's it. Stinky weighs in at 8000 pounds with fuel, canopy, a few tools, and my sorry ***. If you can get a one-ton trailer to haul 5 tons, you're golden. I can hear Roy Scheider chiming in here "You're gunna need a bigger truck".

This is one of those things where you'll wear a bullet-proof vest in case you get in an accident. I'll just bet the Canadian Border Patrol at the Peace Arch crawls all up inside you.

There is a process that many states use to encourage safe driving by those who endanger others on the road-in your case it might involve jail if you run down someone with your overloaded truck. The maximum load on an older F-250 in any state is based primarily on the axle limits as stated on the Ford door sticker. Many of us exceed slightly and do get away with it. You are planning to exceed your trucks safe load by so much that you could much more easily cause a deadly accident and end up being charged for manslaughter. Lawyers cost way more than used trucks. I have already decided against buying that trailer. Which is why I asked here because I was concerned about safety.
