got blinkers, running lights, no brake lights

You should have power to one side of the switch from the fuse. Use a jumper across both pins to see if your brake lights come on. Wires to the pedal switch break sometimes, there's a replacement connector with pigtails available. Pedal switches last for a long time and seldom need replacement.

Sounds to me like:
Check also for the signal light - four way flasher switch. I had the same problem where tail lights and brake lights some times worked and others won't light up , and it ended up being worn out connectors inside the switch. The four ways flasher switch wasn't traveling all the way when switched on and off and was interrupting the functions of the lights.
