. Don't know if a 'built' 302 is going to seem like any kind of a barnburner in a full size truck... still suggest looking at more cubes...

Those heads are Procomp/Speedmaster and aren't worth the money IMO.

I agree, the thing with this build is that I am not looking to win any races. It is simply a clean, simple build for me to enjoy while driving around town. I have a 360 in my 73' and a fresh 360 in the 77' i am picking up next weekend. I plan to build a big thumping 400+cu.in. monster motor out of that for another build. This one is about simplicity so I can finish pretty quickly and have something to enjoy.

. In that case I'd skip the MSD stuff and just use a GM HEI style distributor made to fit a SBF... I think I saw them on eBay for like $65...

. Rebuilding with a 347" kit prolly wouldn't cost much more and give a good boost in torque...

I thought about a 347. What else is required for that type of build?

Those are gt40p heads. Different plug angle. Make sure your headers will work with them. Don't want to burn plug wires.

Don't have headers yet. Are there headers available for those heads?

After checking them out, they are stamped GT, not GT40P. All I have researched shows they are GT40 heads, not GT40P.

Now, I have owned several high performance vehicles before, but I have never built an engine from the ground up. So I compiled a list of parts and would like to see what you guys think.

So for starters... Basic Ford 306 with a target of 300 HP and a little more torque.

Intake- Weiand Stealth or Street Warrior dual plane.
Carb- Demon Street Demon 625 CFM 4bbl.
Headers- FLowtech long tube, 1.5" with 3" collector (painted)
Distributor- MSD pro billet
Ignition- MSD

QUESTION I HAVE IS ABOUT THE HEADS...

I can get a set of Ford Racing Turbo Swirl aluminum heads. Should I go for it to meet my needs? Has the list I have out together sound like a working recipe? Any help would be appreciated.
I can tell you this, you can take that $400+ spent on the MSD stuff and apply it to better heads. The stock Ford Durspark is plenty good compared to MSD . As for a peppy street combo, just a plain jane 94-97 5.0 from a pickup or van will be worlds above what you have now, especially after replacing the rockers with 1.7's and adding a fee flowing exhaust. What I would look at in your case is replacing the motor with a 351W first and foremost.

I am simply not interested in swapping the motor. The truck came with this 302, I am going to use it. I have two fresh 360s that I could build a 445 out of if I wanted to do a motor swap.

I appreciate the info on the Duraspark. Honestly I have been batting around the idea of ditching the MSD dizzy from the build. Where can I source a Duraspark from?

Update...

The heads is purchased are casting no. F3ZE AA

Appears to be GT40 heads offered with the Cobra Mustangs.

You've got a 78 truck ? It's already got a Duraspark system. F3ZE heads were used on more applications than the Cobra Stangs. Also used in marine engines, the Lightning 351's and the 96-mid 97 Explorer/Mountaineer 5.0. The Mustang(only) heads were milled a few thousandths extra to reduce the nominal chamber sizes to 60 ccs. Check your engine's casting numbers, you should have a D8VE block, those with the A3A suffix have the larger 289 Hi-Po/Mexican main caps. The 3A has the smaller std main caps. In any case, the block itself has the same metal content (net weight) as the Hi-po/mex blocks. As such it's an excellent candidate for stroking. There's nothing special needs to be done to swap in a 351W, same bell, same motor mounts as a 302, so it's nothing special to do. You'll get the same fuel economy as a 302 but with more bottomend torque.
