My final goal would be to make the truck reliable to take it anywhere on long distance..
If you bought a new one, you might loose 10k just walking out the door

Shouldn't it be cost of owning an OBS PS. OBS is a well liked platform that is doing a good job keeping it's value. The 7.3 PS can eat a wallet if you let it, but also is legendary and valuable. The point being that given the same condition I'd venture a guess that today in general a 97 F350 CCLB 7.3/4WD is worth the same if not more then a 99 CCLB 7.3/4WD. Taking into account that let's say 5 years ago the 99 cost a lot more and assuming they both cost the same to maintain, you're money ahead with the 97.
“If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.” ―Samuel Adams
