72 3/4 ton highboy??
Searching for a "new" plow truck and looked at 72 3/4 ton today. 300 6, 4 speed, divorced transfer case. This particular truck has smaller hubs on the front. I've never seen such small hubs. I have my old plow truck that has 390, but big hubs on the front. I'm wondering what parts (axle, brakes, etc.) if any are the same as my old truck. It looks to be a 44 like my old truck. I was hoping to find the same truck and have lots of parts. Any help would be appreciated

I think if you want a parts truck then keep looking as the 3,000.Lbs dana 44 will not swap any outer parts. As their was internal hubs=small then their was external HD Hubs=3,500.Lbs Then one which had like 3,800Lbs supper Big HD external Hubs all closed knuckles. This one has more wiper seal bolts , It has like a 6" knuckle ball at the axles tube ends. I guess these were really fitted with the dana 60 type hubs. Most likely what you have..

Orich, the small Dana 44 is a 3300lb closed knuckle axle used for low GVW vehicles. The 44HD is the 3500lb closed knuckle axle with the external hubs used for the 7700lb GVW vehicles just like the HD in my 70 crew. The 3800lb axle is an closed or open knuckle Dana 60 low pinion axle only used in high GVW dents such like the one that is in my 76 crew.

My 71 300 I-6 came with full time 4wd hubs with just a dust cap at the hub ends.
Maybe that 72 was like that also. Which I added locking ones soon afterwards.
But last yr. I moved on the 1976 DH44 external hubs with the disc brake axle.
The f250-f350 1967-75 were fitted with front drum brakes until 1976.
Then in 1976 is when disc brakes and all became open knuckle axle u joints.
Also fitted with small internal hubs & HD 44 3.500 larger external hubs.
Then bigger yet with external hubs was the 60 HD 3,800 with external hubs.
Then in mid yr of 1977.5-1979 the high pinion driveline came on the f250-f350
Which could easily be fitted to be use in the bumps with very little work..
with the stock bump steeling box that is.

Hope this cleans up some of the unknown yr disc brake change overs

2X Bill. I know there are a few guys out there that don't like to go strictly by Ford's parts book as Bill and I do. I am not here to get in a beach sand kicking contest. But I will say the 1st year Ford lists a F350 4X4 front axle parts application is indeed 1979.
