Cleaning gunk from the crank case?
Somewhat unrelated to anything Ford . . . but I know this site has some mechanical geniuses . . . and I need help.
It's a Briggs motor. I use it with a water pump. Apparently the seal went out and there is water in the oil/crank case. The oil's a real pretty off-white!)
What can I put in there to clean all that out? I've heard diesel fuel works very well. Of coarse I wouldn't be starting it, just rotating the crank with starter rope and spark plug removed.

I've found that nothing beats getting in there with brush or scrapers. But only do that if you're overhauling the engine already.
I opened up a 4 liter v6 in an Aerostar van I bought second hand and found an amazing amount of solid crud in it. It had a one-piece intake manifold gasket, with a wide section that spanned the lifter valley. It looked like someone dumped a cup of cat litter on it. There was a similar collection of crud in the oil pan. No amount of engine flushing would have gotten that stuff out.
