1996 F350 E4OD hard shifting is fixed!

I have a '96 F350 CC 4x4 with the 460 and E4OD, I had a lot of issues with hard shifting and having the cruise control kick off as well as an intermittent "OD Off" flashing light on the shifter. When it would shift hard, I felt like the u-joints were going to be snapped.

I took the truck to a tranny shop and they had me put a new vehicle speed sensor in, I used the Echlin 1st and it didn't solve anything and then I read on this site that the Motorcraft sensor is better so I tried that. Still didn't fix anything.

I found this thread on the E series forum:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...nsmission.html

doggoneGA described my problem exactly, what he described could have been written about my truck and replacing the PSOM worked for him.

I found a place called Cluster Fix that advertised being able to fix the problem with the PSOM

Cluster Fix | Instrument Cluster Repair

I e-mailed them and described my issue. I also had the instrument cluster without the tachometer, always wanted the one with the tachometer. Shannon at Cluster Fix gave me a list of options for my cluster that included converting it to the optional OEM cluster with the tach while keeping my odometer reading and conversion constant for my tire size adjustment. He told me he could install a new PSOM.

I was impressed with the customer service there, after I sent it in, it was tested and tested out fine, he asked if I wanted to continue or not. Given doggoneGA's description above, and knowing that it was an intermittent problem at best, I asked that it be repaired/replaced as we originally planned.

I got the part back and installed it and have done some extra driving around and have towed the 5th wheel on a trip over the mountain and it has worked perfectly. The instrument cluster is all OEM.

If anyone else has this problem, I would recommend sending it to CF, the quality of the work was top notch and I felt the price was reasonable. I spent so much time trying to figure out the fix that I wanted to post this so others will know where they can go for help.

That's good info to have around, I was suspicious it could be an ad, but everything checks so I'll leave it. I'm glad this solved the problem you were having.

Bad PSOM

I have a 97 F250 4x4 351 and E40D. I had exactly the same problems as you describe being no cruise sometimes, hard shifting, flashing OD light, and sometimes no speed on the speedo. I changed the cluster with one from my parts truck and the problem disappeared. It worked well for several years and then it started recurring, so I may have to try the CF solution.

Thanks for the tip.
Ron
