One wire alternator converts

For those of you who have made the leap to the one wire GM alternator conversion, does anyone have a year or part number that they used? We have a local U Pull n Pay junk yard and alternators are $22 exchange...just need to know what year range to look at. I have seen reman alternators on cars that got wrecked a few weeks after the alternator was changed out.

Much appreciated!

Any alternator can be converted to single wire. They use the wire to excite the windings and the built in regulator controls the voltage, any repair shop can do the conversion, or I should say any alt. starter, shop can convert your alt. not to expensive.

I've converted several of the GM 10 & 12 SI alternators. I usually pick up a couple of the self excited voltage regulators from the electrical parts vendors at the bigger car shows and like you I look for rebuilt alternators in the salvage yards. I recently picked up a 100 amp 12 SI for 15-20 dollars at my local salvage yard and made the conversion to one wire. Works great.

Take look at this link. This guys gives a good explanation on what to do.
