Scanner makes truck stall?

Picked up a new handheld scanner off the tool truck yesterday, curious to look at the live data stream and any stored DTC's in the ECM...i plugged it in and fired it up (its a 97). Any time i try to read the dtc's or do anything with it running it just stalls like the ecm gets switched off. Any clues?

yup. the scan tool is not compatible with the truck.
most scan tools are not ford diesel compatible.

Funny part is when it loads itll give me a status monitor, tells me the MIL is on when it isnt lit up on my dash...for ignition type it says compression, and finally, it said i have 124 stored DTC's!

autoenginuity.
it is a pc based scan tool, you load it in a laptop and can do damn near anything.
you can buy the enhanced ford bundle from riffraff diesel for $360 : AutoEnginuity Total Ford Enhanced Bundle - Riffraff Diesel Performance
