Which motor does your truck have? 300-6 or 302 (5.0L) or 351 (5.8L) V-8s
I have found it easier to deal with transmissions in Rangers if you pull the engine, leaving everything in open view and less time grubbing around on the ground.
Easiest scenario, much better than 4wd. Drop the exhaust, drive-shaft, get/rent a trans jack, loosen trans crossmember, remove slave cylinder, remove bell-housing bolts, wires, speedo-cable, remove the trans mount, (support with jack) remove crossmember, slide back and drop trans.........everything is exposed to work on.
