oil filter location 1950 F1

There should be an obvious cylindrical canister toward the rear of the engine on the driver's side. I've heard some trucks might have been ordered without a filter because the owner planned to change the oil every 1000 miles. The oil system is a bypass type system, meaning once the filter gets dirty the oil just dumps back into the engine without being filtered.

Thank you !
...........assuming the engine is of the correct vintage, my truck is a 1950 and has no such external filter.............
.......is there any way to tell if this engine is the original to the truck..........?
.........the block is a grayish color and the head is orange......
thanks...........

i think the truck engines were red. i have a 53 car engine with EAB heads and they are (were) orange. what letters are on the heads? i thought the oil filters were a dealer installed (or owner installed) option. it's my understanding that even with a fresh filter only 5% of the oil goes through at a given time. when clogged, nothing goes through which puts you back to no oil filter.

the heads are 8BA, which are period/age correct and orange in color which I have read are correct for the vehicle age............however the block is grayish in color.............the experienced mechanic that is going over the engine believes it was a "rebuild" at some time...................that is why I had asked how to identify engine.......the block has 2,BorR,H:4 on it..........the manifold has a different series of numbers.......

here's some good info from van pelt's site. 8BA is the correct type of engine (49-53), but a truck probably had 8RT heads and was painted red. not that it matters much. the trucks with 8rt actually had less power than the cars. there were so many interchangeable parts and so much swapping going on in the old days a true original engine is rare.
