Question of the Week: Should the US get a new Ranger?
#16
It wouldn't make sense to manufacture a whole other vehicle for such a small market. I have never ran into anyone that disliked a ranger, but I also don't know many that would go buy a new one. There are two common types of truck buyers, the grocery and family haulers and those that use it as a truck. The grocery/family hauler is going to need the larger interior of the F-150 and the people that work them will want the larger capabilities.
Also, manufacturing another vehicle will drive up the prices of the current one. I prefer they offer less models at lower price points with more options. The Raptor is built on the same line as regular F-150s and that keeps the prices lower since it can all be done in one despite how different the vehicles are. I think they should just invest in developing more options on the F-150 like maybe a lower version or (since the raptor is wider) a narrower than standard version to fill the small truck spot. That last idea may not be cost effective but y'all get the idea.

They never will why because they have a pile of **** and want to sell us that ecoboost only is good on the towing aspect everyone i talk to state it a pos when comuting to a jog like high teens only. I used to get 25 with my 87 4.0. Yes i put a 93 4.0 in an 87. Fun job rewired and all. Point is ford does not want to hear what u want they. Have clearly stated that with there actions. They push crap on you and say no u will like this.
I have also moved on since getting a company vehicle. I purchased a 95 powerstroke ext cab i use for towing my camper. Rest of the time it sits. I want to rebody it with a 60's crew cab next year
Paid 3 k for it. And is a rot rod but o payments on it

Ford has lost it's reputation with me. They don't make Rangers, and they don't make manual trucks. Everyone loves Rangers, and everyone who isn't lazy loves manuals. The only way they can bring back their name is to 1.) Bring back manual transmissions in the whole truck and SUV line, and 2.) Say goodbye to CAFE standards and give us some real fuel economy and power. I used to be a Ford man, but Dodge makes better vehicles and cares more about their customers at this point in time.

Well worth a read to see why it's not likely the Ranger as we knew it will be back:

I agree Ford needs to bring it back, only don't try to do the same thing that GM did with Canyon / Colorado, they are closer to a full size than a compact. Also, as someone else stated, drop a diesel or EB in it, you can't convince me a compact truck with either of the above engines won't get better mileage than a full size truck.

I am on my 6th Ranger beginning May 1984. I have a motorhome to travel in and tow my ranger behind. I have towed all 6 of my Rangers since July 1989 up to my 2011 4 door Super cab. All 6 have been 5 speed manual transmissions. The main reason I replaced my 2003 is Ford stopped production.

I'm seriously considering a Jeep Wrangler for my next purchase. You can still get one with a manual transmission and they seem to have less of the foo-foo stuff that will break sooner or later. Without a bed to haul stuff in, I would just get a trailer. I need a trailer to haul my bikes anyway, so I would be able to get rid of my three rail bike trailer. With the climate where I live, my Aerostar does quite well at hauling plywood and lumber, keeping it locked up and dry, but it won't last forever. Ford stopped making those in '97.
I thought about a Toyota Tacoma. They are (last time I checked) available with a manual. However, someone I work with purchased a Tacoma over a year ago (after owning a Ranger for many years) and he doesn't like it. It's too big. He wants his Ranger back but no manufacturer makes a truck the size of the Ranger.
If I wanted an F-150, I would have bought one instead of my Ranger. But, I want something that fits in the garage easily.

The Motley Fool had an article a couple days ago about the possibility of Ford bringing back the Ranger. They made a few good points on their path to a "no" conclusion. They discussed the size of the current small pickup and how that had grown over the years to where there just wasn't a big difference anymore to justify the compact pickup. The other point had to do with Ford not being able to import the foreign made Ranger into the US because of some old tariff law that would make it impractical. They didn't see a total redesign in Ford's future. The article thought Ford would continue to try to make the F150 lighter and boost MPG's through weight saving and the ecoboost engine thereby bringing most of the Ranger market into the F150 line.
Not saying I agree with everything in the article but a good read nonetheless. Personally I think there is a market for a small truck and maybe they have to go back to making a "small" truck for the Ranger to have a reason to exist.
