does anybody know if the 1997 model year powerstroke was the newer OBD for California models? I think I read something from Ford a while back that California was the only state that the diesel got the newer on board diagnostics.
I have read so many articles saying that my truck is an obd 2 and had people tell me the same thing. I fought with two smog shops over the smogging of the truck. I took it back to the shop the p.o. used to have service and smog it and voila smogged it a an obd1. The obd2 trucks are maf and have I believe two o2 sensors as well as the plug in the cab under the dash.
My truck is speed density and has one o2 sensor and has the 2 plugs under the hood.
One smog technician I argued with told me he was going to report me to carb and be cause my trucks emissions and computer had been tampered with needless to say he ate his words when I took the smog report back to him and showed him it smogged as obd1.
Not necessarily when it comes to the obd1 and obd2 in California.
(the smog ****'s state)
Crew, I'm guessing your truck wasn't sold originally as a CA truck. The only 96-97 7.5's I've seen here in CA that were OBDI are trucks that were originally from other states.
Ford has done that since the 40's. Chevy has done iy since the early 30's. Probably even earlier than that but those are the years I know I have seen them use parts from the previous years.
Sounds like my Fender and Marshall guitar amps. In the 60s if they ran out of a certain value capacitor they'd use something else, contributing to each amp's unique tonal character.
A little off topic but I have a 95 ranger that is obd2. According to most of the reading ford trucks started obd2 in 96. I look at it like this fords are like a box of chocolates. You know the rest of that story.
