trailer brakes

Hello, I have a 2001 f150 xtr , it has the towing package with two trailer plug ins . I 'm wondering if the trailer brakes are powered when you apply the truck brakes as I don't see ant indicators of this happening such as a light.
Would the trailer brakes be wired from the factory ?
Thanks

No, you need to get a brake control unit. Companies like Prodogy make a good unit. It is a small box that mounts under the steering column to the bottom of dash. It will have a 6 prong plug that will connect to an empty harness plug under your dash. THe unit has a pendulum and monitors the deceleration of the truck and send a proportional voltage signal to the brakes. I will post a link to the Prodogy unit that I bought on e-bay.. Don't go cheap, then don't work as good as the "proportional" units.

attached link also shows photo of the electrical plug. NOTE.. P2 units are all the same, but you need a specific adaptor harness for different trucks.

You need to mount and connect an after market controller in the cab.
There is a provided connector under the dash. You need the adapter cable from the controller to the Ford connector.
You need to install a relay and fuse in the engine bay fuse box to complete the job.
Then calibrate according to brake controller instructions with trailer attached.
Trailers over 3000 lbs usually require aux brakes, a safety break-away cable actuated switch, and a trailer mounted battery to operate the brakes should the trailer get free form the tow vehicle.
Surprise!
Good luck.
