Bro, on the contrary, it is critical to maintain defensible space around your house and property if you want to keep it. I worked many years in the business, before retirement. Fire crews will only defend homes that are savable. I've seen homes that had very good defensible space survive the fire without any firefighting equipment there for protection at all. Proper defensible space, as well as NOT having a shake roof and a few other measures, makes a huge difference. The only time it doesn't make a difference is when there is no fire.

We're really big on defensible space up here. I actually founded a youth fire safe council here when I was 13 and won a $3000 competitive grant to fund it. All of the fire crews keep coming by and asking if they can do this or that on the backside of my property and theyre almost surprised with how positive we are here about their thinning.

I tell them everything they cut out now is something i dont have to cut out next year.

when i was a kid my dad left me running the john deere 4440 with a brush hog on it. i was making my passes and when i turned back south, there at the front of the property was a HUGE grass fire. i mean, police, state troopers, EMS, traffic stopped on the lake road… i stopped and drove up looking for my dad… he had ended up cutting his knee open with the chain saw and was unable to maintain two things out of control… a controlled field burn and profuse bleeding…

funny memories now but glad it wasn't worse than that…
i'm doubting destructive fires are that funny these days either…
like i said before, stay prepped. stay ready.
cheers dudes.
