I broke one off when I was cleaning it. It had been rusted half way through. My vanes didn't look like that though!

Sean, I remember ready your post! I'm sure you stared at it for a minute thinking, did that just happen?? lol

You know the funny thing there were no codes, no drivability concerns, just wanted to clean it up and that is what he found. No clue how that thing was working, it sure shouldn't have been... Besides the one vane with the broken stud, one other was pretty difficult to pull off.

What would cause pitting like that, extreme EGTs? BY THE WAY, the turbo has reman tags, so it was replaced by the PO at some point.

My vanes didn't show signs of pitting at all. In the one photo where they are all lined up, interesting to see the same pattern of decay on most of them. I was trying to see the position of the turbo and relation of the worst vanes.

Everything I have read is all caused by rust. I have seen photos of others with vanes like these. Rust and lack of use has been deemed the cause. Mine, I think, was already rusted when I bought it, since the Original owner had replaced the turbo twice. He rarely drove it.
