1973 f100 460 swamp mess..
Well I went to look a truck I was thinking about buying. It's a 1973 f100, body is straight no rust. Cab was replaced, and the truck is sanded I guess that's what I'll call it. But after popping the hood, seeing it wasn't the stock 360fe. It's been swapped with a 460, it has a Holley double pumper and msd distributer. But it's a mess. Wire nuts bolts plugging vacuum lines. The truck hasn't been started in a long time and the battery is gone. Think its worth $1000? I'm planning on going back with a battery and some gas to dump down carb to see if it will even fire up.
Can't figure out how to post pictures I took of the motor. But will post the link of Craigslist.
They were asking more for the truck.

Its a matter of geography on what something is worth IMO. Where im from just a rust free box will sell for $1000 so a complete rust free truck here would be a screaming deal regardless of mechanical condition. Im betting these old fords are easy to find rust free in texas, but is it what you are looking for exactly? Id buy that truck all day long since (A) its only $1000 which doesnt buy much of anything these days, and (B) i can part it out if i find its not what i want and come out ahead, the carb and distributor are worth a couple hundred on their own, and (C) i would WAY rather have a 460 then a 360 fe, but thats just a personal opinion, i know alot of folks on here love fe's and all original trucks.
Are you looking for a totally problem free $1000 truck? The issues you mentioned are minor and easily remedied, i would expect many more issues to show up on a 40 year old $1000 truck. The good thing about these trucks is they are cheap and easy to repair

Well, lets see. I bought my '77 F350 XLT Ranger Supercab Camper Special it looked alright. It still looks alright. The guy (Great dude by the way) I bought it from was asking $1200. Had an original 460, 185k Miles.
I went through the truck over the period of 30 minutes. Checking the oil pan, the Drive Shaft, tranny, Plugs, Caps, Carb, Frame, Lights all that jazz.
I offered him $800 cash and he accepted.
I suggest going over the whole truck. Try Shifting Gears if you get the motor running check the Tranny Fluid and Oil. Check the Hazards, Dash Lights, Turn Signals, the works. Run your hand on the oil pan and push to make sure it isnt "Soft" same with the frame and common rust areas.
Cash in hand can go a long way. It doesnt hurt to make an offer, and the only bad thing he can say is "No".

By all means I'm looking for a project truck for my son and I, to restore and for him to drive to school in a few years. I found a 1974 f100 360fe but it's 3 on the tree. Both of us are not a fan of that. But it's in a lot better shape.
How did you post/attach the picture?
Thanks for the tips, if it does run. After we clean the fuel system up. Think it's a wise idea to pull the tranny pan and drop the valve body and clean it make sure no valves are stuck?

If you plan on doing a restoration, why not.
I do suggest paying close attention if you can get either one of the trucks running to listen for any ticks or noises outside a normal idle.
I've read guys on here picking up a C6 Transmission from their local Auto Yard for 100$ if you want to go that route. On Fords look around the Drip Rails, the Cab Corners, Fenders, and Wheel Wells for rust. Key spots. Same thing with Rockers, and bottoms of the doors, The back of the Bed, and around the tailgate.

The Engine bay looks like a boggled mess! Those look like the original wheels, or from a few years after. Should be 16.5's which finding Tires is something you can do online with very few choices. No one really makes 16.5's anymore.
You're upper trim is all there. Which is a plus. The Trim is expensive! It looks like there is a dent in the bed on the passenger side, or its just my eyes playing tricks. Couldnt tell about rust, but deffinetly crawl under the truck and look at everything. If you can poke a screw driver or your finger through anywhere in the Frame, I'd pass. If the frame is soft and brittle, you could end up doing more work than you'd want to get into.
The Engine Bay just looks messy. Wiring, Hoses. I'm no in depth mechanic or know too much about older Ford's but I'm sure some of the other guys around here can help. Have you tried checking the lights? Floor boards, anything on the interior? It would be a better help if you could crank it over.
Just some tips.
Also I had that same carb on my '85 Chevy. I had nothing but trouble with it. That carb is set up for an Electric Choke. I opted for an Edelbrock 1406 when I got rid of the Holley.

Well passed on the truck. After looking into it more they cut part of the frame to fit the 460 in it. Looks like the didn't know how to weld ether the motor mounts were a mess.
We ended up getting a 1971 mustang solid body no interior (it's sitting out side the car) but a fresh 302 and disc brakes on the rear for $1800 it's a semi barn find. A older lady said her husband was restoring it and got the body and drive train done. He passed before he could send the interior to the upholstery shop. She was asking $1000 but with all that was done we paid her more because it's a great car. All it needs is a paint job and interior. I put the driver seat in it and drove it about 30 miles with a smile ear to ear.
Thanks again guys! Still think we want a truck once we get this mustang cleaned up. I'll be back lol!
