Transmission part through my windshield !!
I was in the fast lane of a 3 lane highway when a car ahead of me ran over a piece of metal and shot it through my windshield. I was not hurt. My 2007 Ranger 4 x 4 only suffered windshield damage. No marks on my hood or front end. The glass shower was the only thing that happened to me. The metal piece ended up on my lap. I found out a full size Dodge truck had blown out the transmission. Looks like the linkage connection to the housing. How on earth can a transmission blow and leave parts all over the road???????????????
I'm lucky it did not hit my in the face or head!!
didnt even hit the wiper
dodge truck transmission part
i saw it coming but too late to do anything
cant see but there is glass shards everywhere

HOLY SNAP!! You're lucky! Sucks about the windshield, but it could have been WAY worse.
The only transmission I've ever had blow up was the 3sp column shift in my old 63 Falcon. Wasn't so much the transmission, but the U-Joint at the front of the driveshaft let go about 80% on I39 in Illinois. There was big vibration, a loud BANG like the world exploded, and a very freaked out 21 year old trying to figure out what happened in the dark one international border and three states from home. The whole rear half of the transmission housing snapped ... but it still shifted and drove. As long as I kept the rpms below 1500 it wasn't thumping too bad. Limped it like that about 40 miles to a truck stop. They just don't build 'em like that anymore!!
Glad you're okay ... hope you had a change of underwear with you. I know I'd have needed one!!

Glad you're okay. That could've turned ugly pretty quick. And, at least it wasn't an axe - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-28573371

Good grief, That gave me cold chills looking at it. Good to hear you weren't hurt. Somebody was looking out for you!!!! Good to see only the windshield took the brunt of it, as its easily replaced.
Keep the photos, debris chunk & any info the officer collected if you reported the incident, as the insurance company will like appreciate getting it.
Would be interesting to hear how they handle it.
You know, since you have the photos, the evidence, ect, this would make an interesting news story. Maybe consider contacting your favorite news source that often does road stories, as their is a lesson for all of us to learn here, like how close were you following the vehicle that ran over & tossed the debris & how fast the traffic was moving????
Had a big stone thrown up by a car in front of me on I-95 south of DC one rainy afternoon. I saw it coming, but not in time to respond, as it was tossed up & it bounced once off the road, hit & cracked the windshield inside & out, dead center below the rear view mirror but didn't penetrate. Was a brand new Avis Rental, took notes & reported it when I checked it in. They just shrugged their shoulders & wrote it down, guess they see that kind of trivia all the time, but your case is Unusual, you had the evidence land in your lap!!!!

Did you have a chance to tak with the driver from the Dodge?
Must be a bad time of the year for windshields. Saw this on cnn.
