1973 f100 vin issues fishy?
New to the forum!!!
I'm looking at 1973 f100. The vin is F10YKS27913. The cab has been replaced. Bed and front is black cab is red. The motor that's in the is a 460 (7 valve cover bolts) it has a Holley double pumper and looks to be MSD distributer. My issue is the truck is about 2 hours from me. The vin matched the title they have. But if the "body" is a f100 that came with 460 in it. Wouldn't this be a fraud truck? I'm in Texas, and need a little help. Looking for my first truck to restore with my son. We have already done a 1990 mustang and want to go a little older. I've been speaking with them about the truck on the phone and text. They don't seem to know much about this truck, the story is it's a customer that had work done at there shop and paid them with the truck. Fishy... But tempting don't want to get burned it's a good looking truck. It's not bad price they have $1200 on it but I know I'll get it for $700-$1000. Thoughts

The VIN is F10Yxxxxx and a Y-Code is a 360FE. 460s weren't offered in F100s so an engine swap has been done. It doesn't make it a "fraud" per se.
I am not familiar with TX registration or TX engine swap laws. I suggest ya read through Texas' DMV/DOT website to get the skinny on what is allowed and what is not. Make sure the title matches whatever official VIN Texas looks at... some states it is the frame VIN and some is the VIN on the warranty plate. They're supposed to match but in CA, the DMV workers are so busy that all they look at is the warranty plate or, in newer vehicles, the plate that is visible through the windshield or stamped on the inner fender.
Be an informed buyer. No one wants a vehicle that cannot be registered... legally.

But i do think it's a swap. Where might I find a vin on the frame?
Thanks for the welcome

F250? Yes.
F350? Yes.
The frame VIN is on the top right of the frame rail... below the battery. Btw, my 73 doesn't have one... and I've looked, hard.
The other VIN is also on the top right frame rail under the cab.. right around where the passenger's butt would be. It cannot be viewed easily.

Fellow Texan here. You should direct all legal, registration, and CYA-type questions to the Texas DMV. That's true of any state, really. Don't take legal advice on from an internet forum. It's either wrong, or unofficial, both of which are useless to you. Explain what you have and ask to be directed to a written form of instructions on what to do. I've had to call them a couple times for "what do I do" type questions and got the help I needed. Just get on the phone. Don't skimp.

2X what HIO Silver said re TX DMV's 'assembled vehicle manual.' I'd also suggest talking to people in the tag office to understand how they interpret that document.
I'm in Georgia with a 76 F-150 whose doors had been swapped out. There is no VIN on the dash as with modern cars. They didn't start doing that until the mid 80s. The tag on the driver's side door is the most accessible vehicle ID.
The registration jibed with the VIN on the door but was different than the VIN on the passenger side of the frame just below the alternator. Complicating this further, Georgia did not become a title state until 1985. I had only a Bill of Sale and the PO's registration.
In talking with the folks at the tag office, I learned that I could get a form and ask the Sheriff's office to send a deputy over to look at the VIN on the frame and complete the form. Fortunately, I had all of the front sheet metal removed and had scrubbed that part of the frame with a wire brush so that the deputy could easily see the VIN.
I won't get a title but I will get an accurate registration. Now I can feel much better about investing time, effort and money into this truck. There is a company that will sell you a new, accurate door tag plus the rivets to attach it with. They also provide the warranty sticker that is affixed to the driver's side door jamb of the cab. Ive already cleared up my issue with the vin. The question I've asked was more on the 429/460 that's in the truck. So it has to be a complete swap tranny and motor. How do I tell what tranny is in the truck? I know if I want to find out if it's 429/460 I have to measure the stroke. But is there an easy way to see what tranny in it?
