What is this worth...

This is a 1966 f250 2wd non-custom cab flatbed. I would like your opinions on what you would pay for it. I am thinking about buying it. The truck has sat in the same spot for the last 12 years and would need work to get it to fire up, so I cant really attest to how it runs. I do know that just prior to it being parked it had been overhauled. They are wanting $3000 for it and I think that is too much. However- it has really good sheet metal with the only rust through being in the cab mounts. It has the 300 six cylinder and 4speed tranny. Thanks all!

It's hard to say because it looks like it was parked in a sandstorm!

Seriously though. If the body is that solid then it comes down to the engine.

I'd try to get the engine to at least fire, even if it's just for a short time. With barn/field cars I take a fresh battery, a container of gas that can use gravity to feed the carb, some starter fluid and some spark plug sockets and socket wrench. (along with misc other tools).

I can go through my barn/field car engine check procedure if you need/want me to.

All that having been said, if the engine is ok, three grand would be at the very tippy top of what I'd pay for it....and probably wouldn't when it came right down to it.

I'd be way more comfortable at $2K and would probably still be vaguely interested at $2500.

Thank you- 2000$ is exactly what I thought it should be at. The guy might come down some too, I will be talking with him. The dash pad is one of the nicest I have seen. It was kept covered and it shows.

Buying the '66

Hi JJ, I drive a '65 F-100 2wd. I bought it on 12/23/82. I paid $550.00 for it. It came from So. Carolina. The engine was very loose. I replaced it one year later. It had little rust then. I moved to N.C. in 2,000. It has a little more rust now. I have since replaced the 2nd engine. the current motor ( a 240 cid 6) has 161,000 miles on it. I have recently replaced the king pins/bushings(brass). Also had a new ring/pinion replaced. New windshield, all new window rubber. I am telling you all this because I need to give you something to compare what I have to what is for sale. Ask the sellers do they have any receipts showing the engine work that was done. If I were in your shoes: I would pull the coil wire and then pull all the plugs. I would then turn the motor over for 15/20 secs. and wait a minute. Then repeat, turn it over for 15/20 secs. Wait for a minute. do this for 4/5 times. Replace plugs/coil wire. Does the gas tank smell like varnish?? If so remove that and clean it out. Not sure what to use there. If the gas tank doesn't smell, ok put a gallon or two in it. See if it will start. back to the price, need to know the motor status then drive it. Tire condition?? Lemme know, Pete

Buying the '66

Hi again JJ, After pondering your find, I would get the engine to run. Let it run up to operating temp. I would drive it too. The whole point of turning the engine over( that I recommended in my first thread) with the coil wire out is to have the oil pump put oil thru out. Sure don't want to start it having sat for 12 yrs. with no oil pressure any where!!! On the price: I would start at $2,250. The seller will probably go to 2,500. Now I am guessing here. You can point out the condition of the tires. ( I am guessing they are dry rotted???). I run Michelin super radials, 16" rims and got 19 mpg recently. That is another story. Sounds/looks like a solid truck. Nice dash. padded they were called when they came out. Wish my standard cab ( like yours, had a padded dash). I want to say that on my truck when the 3,000 miles is due to come up to change the oil and the 3,000 miles will fall in the middle of the coming week---I have the oil/filter changed the weekend before. I can say that in 161,000 miles I have always done this. It burns no oil, the oil is barely brown at 3,000 miles. You will do well to keep the 300 cid motor. I will not change my 240 -6 for a V8. Cheers, Pete

You said it is a flatbed, so no bed included. If it had a short bed $2000.00 to $2500.00 Long bed $1000.00 to $2000.00 No bed at all and your fine with that then the price depends on motor.
I can tell you what I would pay here in So. Cal. Flatbed not running, $600.00 to maybe $1000.00 and that's a big maybe. If running with good compression, up to $1500.00 I know I can get a bed for it, short bed $500.00-$600.00 Long bed $50.00 and up.
The price as you can tell, is all about location and availability.

The '65-66 hides its rust very well. By this I mean that if the mounts are rusty, look closely at the bottom of the rad support, cab corners, kick panels and the inner fender under the fender.

I just love old Ford F100 trucks!

Non running $1500, if it runs, $2000ish.

I hope you get to buy it.

I paid $950.00 for mine after it had been setting for years. Never been wrecked, needs paint and tires. Solid California no rust truck except for some patina on the hood and top.
Good running 352, 4 speed and a posi rear. I had to clean out the tank first as I bought it without being started so I took a chance and it turned out OK.
I figured 1,500 to 2,000 would be a fair price for a good runner depending on paint, tires etc.
My budget for a truck was 2,000 bucks so that gave me over 900 bucks after paying for the tags to have some fix up cash to make it safe and look decent.
Good luck,
