Turbo Boost Hose - Popped (exploded) Off Turbo

2005 F250 PSD Crew Cab w/100k miles

I recently had my oil cooler replaced (OEM), the EGR cooler replaced (Bullet Proof), Blue spring upgrade and a couple other maintenance items taken care.

After the work, I had around 45 miles on the rig (30 miles on highway) before I started towing a 7,000 load down the interstate. Well 4 miles onto the interstate, I heard a very loud bang (like a tire exploding) and lost power. It turned out to be the turbo boost hose had blown off of the turbo. The metal pipe going to the rubber connector which connects to the turbo.

I suspect the clamp on the hose was not tightened enough when the oil cooler work was done but could there be any other problems that caused the hose to absolutely explode off of the connector? Something that built up pressure? It sounded like more than 20psi worth of explosion and I was going 65 mph on the highway.

After we got the hose clamp tightened down on the pipe, I did take the full tow over 1,000'+ steep climb elevation with no problems. EOT got up to 222 deg but with only a 5 degree delta.

Thank you in advance for comments.

Clamp wasn't tightened properly. Don't over analyze it. You'll be happier that way.

I agree, since it was just worked on. Need to make sure both surface areas are free of oil and the clamp tightened properly.

Do yourself a favor if you haven't already and invest in a set from Riff Raff diesel. High quality and they come in several colors, if you need to replace them in the future.

After cleaning, some of Us spray the connecting areas with hair spray. Adds some stickiness to them.

You would be surprised at how much energy 20 psi really is. Especially after calculating the surface area inside that tube.

Big dent contest! Mine blew off at a WOT 28 psi run and also at 20 psi passing, huge noise difference at only 8 psi difference. The ford boots will do you fine up to 35 psi i read, make sure the mating surface is clean of oil and aligned properly. No need for hairspray. Although Riff Raff boots do have fancy colours

Yup! I needed new shorts after that one! I was 65-70 mph towing 7K plus which is all new to me. Never owned a pick-up truck before. A Subaru Forester has been my weekend driver (I live in NYC and have a house in the country) and I have a lifted & locked 2006 TJ Rubicon for fun.

Thank you for all of the comments and advice.

We blew our hose off while towing 12K fifth wheel. Lucky for us we was 20 miles from home. I knew of ways getting home so didn't go via freeway as max speed was 30 mph. Got new hose and clamps as they have changed a lot from 04. $125 later we are back to normal.
