Gear ratio upgrade

I have a 1995 F-150 4x4 with 5.0, 4r70w, and 3.31 gears riding on 33 x 10.50 BFG All Terrains, my question is what would be a good gear upgrade 4.10 or 4.56? I feel the 4.30 would be perfect but no one make that available for a reverse rotation TTB Dana 44

How do you use the truck? The D44 ratio you would use with 4.30 rear axle gears is 4.27. Pick 4.30 gears if you use the truck as a general purpose vehicle, go for 4.56 if you want more performance and don't do a lot of highway travelling.

Pretty sure no one makes a 4.27 set for the D44 reverse rotation (not certain, just can't find a set). Other option is to upgrade to a D50 third member, which does have a 4.27 set available (sounds like a PITA though). With D44 reverse our options are 4.10 or 4.56.

I was thinking about the same thing this weekend as my rear is giving me some grief, and I'm planning 33x10.5 tires too. 4.10 with 33s would be similar to 3.55 with 235/75R15's, but 4.30 would be a nice little bump over stock while 4.56 just seems too deep for the amount of highway running I do. But for your 5.0L truck, the 4.56 might be a good idea.

Overdrive is, what, 0.71:1? Should put your truck around 2275 RPM at 70mph with 4.56, or 3250 RPM in drive with the 33" tire.
4.10 at 70mph would be around 2040 RPM in overdrive or 2920 RPM in drive.
I'm not sure what the 5.0L would like more. Of course, if you don't run highway much, the deeper gear makes more sense.

I wish I could figure the right gear ratio out, The truck will absolutely fly on the highway now, but down low it's very sluggish unless you wind it up real hard, I've drove first gen Lightnings with 4.10 and they seemed to run real nice, but they have something like 30 inch tires, with my 33x10.50 BFG'S I wonder if 4.56 would be better, but I primarily drive this truck like a car, don't haul or tow much, It's my baby though and I don't care to spend the money to upgrade just wish I had some more wisdom on the gears!!!lol

Here's a formula you can use to see what gear ratio you need to get back to stock gearing. Once you know that you can determine what gear ratio will best suit your needs.

Proposed Gearing = original gearing X tire height in inches/29 = .....

Example Your truck originally came with 235/75 R 15. They were 29 inches in height. Your original gearing was 3.31 so - 3.31X29/29=3.31
To get the same overall gearing with 33" tires simply do the math.
3.31X33/29=3.76
If you want more performance then perhaps use another common gear ratio to start with. Many of our truck came with 3.55 gearing so - 3.55X33/29=4.03

Naturally the gear ratio you will come up with may not be available but get the next closest ratio to what you determined was optimal.

Good luck.

Actually my truck came equipped with 265/75/15 tires and 3.31 gears, oddly it has the towing package and handling package as well. The tire size and axle code I7 is plainly visible on the door tag. Truck is mass air also which seems to be rare in 95 also.

The 5.0 is the weakest motor in the lineup at low rpms so these trucks should have come with 3.73 gears minimum IMO.

Mass-air on a 1995 truck with a 5.0L engine is VERY common.

Still looking for help with gear ratio, looks like it's gonna have to be 4.10 or 4.56?

I would seriously consider 4.56s since you have a 5.0L and 33" tires.
