Knocking real bad and puffen white smoke

My truck with 250k+ on original injectors started ticking like a tappet, then started occasional light knocking and now sounds like a rod wanting to come through the block and puffing white smoke like one holes not firing. All fluids are ok, oil looks fine, gauges were all i the normal range. Looking through some past threads it sound like maybe a broken injector tip?? Will that cause any internal damage?

More info: I checked for codes and none were listed. I've done a buzz test and they all buzzed with only slight variations in sound. I hate to start it to do a contribution test for fear of causing damage. Has anyone been down this road before?

White smoke is most likely water. Injector cup maybe leaking

White smoke is only from one cylinder (puff). I was 75 miles into a trip when things went south. It was running great up to that point.

Would a leaking cup make it knock like a rod wants to escape? I have all kinds of nasty visions going through my mind like dropped valve or broken rod/piston etc. but I'm hoping for something less distructive.

A bad cup probably wouldn't cause a knock. A bad injector could certainly cause white puffing exhaust and a knock though. You might have to start it and cut off each injector one at a time to isolate the problem cylinder. That's what a shop would do anyhow, honestly. Pull the valve covers and make sure there aren't any obvious issues with the valvetrain first and you'll have access to start popping injector harness connectors off.

I've had several diesels and had injector failures but none have been These newer high pressure oil driven units. I've heard that they knock but holy cow I never thought it would be this loud. If I pull the plug from the problem cylinder would the knock stop?

If you unplug 1 at a time and the sound stops that may indicated a bad injector.

My bet is that you have a broken or split nozzle on one of your injectors. Your description sounds exactly like when I had a nozzle split around 250k miles. Isolating the bad injector and unplugging it might help....not sure because I've never tried it.

Did it cause any collateral damage? It sounds terrible!

Ah... injector knock... my nemesis. It sounds like Thor jamming with Bam Bam in there, but this is what Stinky survived when I addressed injectors:

The first video was a bad injector, the second was two loose injectors. Check your oil level, too.

When l watched the first video saw down a ways was a video from a Brandon Girardi that unfortunately sounded more like my problem..a broken skirt. Does anyone know if you remove the oil plug can you see the bottoms of all 8 holes with a borescope? Or is there a splash pan in the way. I've never had one of these apart.

I know the pan has a plate in it but can't remember if it covers the plug

If you just have to look you could tie the oil stick flange off and push it in and look just need a new oring and nut to put it back on

Ahhhh yes... The perfect reason to have dual EGT gauges, it would definitely help narrow down one bank and you'd have something to compare to (the opposite bank).

These guys have you covered, I just wanted to ad some food for thought
