6.0 Rebuild

I wanted to start a new thread to show the rebuild of my brothers 6.0. He is not is a hurry since his truck still running fine (just a little blowby). Block is bored .020 over and was decked .005, crank is turned .010/.010. He has an extra set of heads, if he can stay within Ford specs he will use them, if not he will be using them as cores for Ford remans. He purchased a Ford Over haul kit, so everything so far is OEM with the exception of the main and rod bearings, and they are Clevite.

He also has a set VR 20mm HGs that in the kit, we are hoping to get THAT straightened out next week.

I am pretty excited to help because I am getting to see the parts I've only heard about... For instance, I didn't know the bed plate also serves the purpose for the main bearing caps, pretty crazy...

At what point do you need to worry about destroked pistons?

That is a good question. I am interested to know as well. Between what was removed from the deck, and what will be from the heads have to stay within spec... Seems like it would be tough to do without having new heads.

I think mahle makes .010 destroked pistons. So if they have to take .005 off of the heads it would get you right back where stock ia.

Hi Shane, I'm in the middle of a rebuild also. Word of advice... if you want to have lazy guys like me look at your pics, get them hosted on a site like photobucket and post them instead of the links.
My block is being decked... I will need to see it and talk to the machinist, but I'm not sure a 0.005 cut would cause any problems. I just measured my old head gaskets, and came up with a 0.059 gasket thickness. Assuming a zero piston deck height(IIRC) you shouldn't need to shave the pistons. All of this is theory, I don't have the block here.
Did the Ford overhaul kit include lifters, and what was the price?

IIRC the pistons come out of the bore ~ .032.

If you do this then the bedplate won't leak.

Comming from the dealerships we stoped painting engines years ago, it was a cost reduction movement. They saved on warranty oil leaks and paint.
