Thermostat oem temp

New guy here and just picked up a 93 150 XL 4x4 and it runs great with 148000 on it but have found a few minor things to work on. 1st noticed that the coolant was RUST BROWN so did a flush and refill looks good after a 1000 miles or so now and no heating problems also changed the rad cap now I figure if things looked that bad maybe I should change the thermostat to. I thought the guy I got it from said he had it change recently but who know and I'm sure he said he put a 160 in it. Makes me wonder if he had an overheating problem and that was a quick fix. I want to go with OEM so what temp should a 300- 6 have in it?

Thanks
Mike

2nd question ? If I decide to also change out the water pump can I just remove the what looks like 4 bolts that hold the pulley on the pump without taking the fan off the pulley?

192 is the OEM temp for these and most any vehicle. Go with MotorCraft, not Stant, or Murray. They fail 3 out of 4 times. Did with me, and I finally gave up.

On the 300, I know the fan blade is gonna have to come out. The water pump is a breeze though. Memory is real fuzzy as to how many bolts, but way easier than the V8's.

Thanks timber was starting to think I posted in the wrong place Was going with Motorcraft just wasn't sure of what temp I needed to get

The ? on the pump since it looks like the pump doesn't come with a pulley I should just be able to take the pulley off and not have to remove the fan from the fan clutch is this correct? I know that can be a real bugger.

The fan clutch w/blade is screwed onto the snout of the water pump. I rented the tool to remove it so that I wouldn't damage the radiator while working to get to the pump. Memory is fuzzy, but I have owned 2, and now only one, but that's all I can tell ya.

Maybe another member can chime in and say yes or no.

Ok timber couldn't find a MC 192 but did find a 190 so went with that

Unless the pulley is screwed onto the shaft of the water pump I think I can just remove the 4 bolts that hold it to the pump itself? Like you said maybe someone else will chime in. I'm on a retired budget so have to do a little at a time anyways. Plus I'll do some more checking.

Thanks a bunch on the t-stat temp

The fan is screwed on to the water pump and has to come off before you unbolt the pulley. I recall its also a left handed thread too. Best to get the proper wrenchs(2 of them, one holds the pump still and other turns the fan shaft nut) that is designed for removing those fans. Most auto parts places should have them to loan out.

Even with the proper wrenches, it can still be a PITA to get that fan to unscrew.
