5R110 or turbo noise

I have a really bad noise coming from the rear of engine under dash. sounds like cavitating or cratered bearing. it only occurs when pulling fifth wheel, 55 ish MPH 3000 ish RPM (that is hard pulling uphill) not sure of the gear it is in. letting off will stop the noise. is this a shift point problem? do the turbos produce this kind of noise? also have a shudder when taking off from stop lasts until I am over five-8 mph. and when slowing to stop there is a very hard downshift. 08 350 SD 6.4 PS. any suggestions?

Every have the tranny serviced? How many miles?

When towing you are in tow/haul mode? If so then that explains the downshift.

the shudder at take off has to do with the driveline angle when loaded. Very common problem till you get moving.

I have 78000 on truck, purchased with 48000 miles, I was told it had a "full service" oils and fluids, had both filters and 9 quarts replaced at about 60000. the shudder and noise are only noticed when towing 16k fifth wheel, the hard downshift is about 90% of the time loaded or not. and if drive line angle when loaded is common is there a common solution.

air bags to raise the rear back up when loaded works well.

Now about the turbo noise. Could that better be described as the blend door actuators?

Try shutting off the HVAC and see if the noise goes away.

not a/c related happens irrespective of ac or fan settings the sound is loud and sounds like a cavitating prop with some gravel thrown in for good measure. could fluid be shearing or boiling off in valve body of tranny. seems that if it was turbo it would severely damaged, and noisy all the time.

DRIVE-AWAY SHUDDER OR VIBRATION
Publication Date: November 3, 2006

FORD:
1999-2007 F-Super Duty
This article supersedes TSB 05-17-6 to update the vehicle model years.

ISSUE:

Some 1999-2007 F-Super Duty vehicles may exhibit excessive drive-away shudder or vibration, under moderate to heavy acceleration from a stop. This may be due to driveline angle.

ACTION:

Shim the center carrier bracket downward to correct the condition. Refer to the following Service Procedure.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

When shimming the center carrier bracket, a maximum of three (3) 1/4″ shims may be used (EOTZ-4A209-A). When refastening the carrier bracket use bolt (56564-S2). A 7/16 x 14 grade 5 bolt may be substituted providing that it extends at least three (3) threads past the nut. Use Motorcraft® Threadlock 262, and torque bolts to 46 lb-ft (62 N-m).

NOTE: IF THE VEHICLE IS NORMALLY LOADED, ROAD TESTS WILL NEED TO BE PERFORMED WITH THE VEHICLE LOADED.
Before beginning the repair, road test the vehicle to gain a feel for the harshness of the shudder/vibration.
Install one (1) shim, (DO NOT use threadlock on the bolts at this point), re-road test vehicle.
If condition is corrected, apply threadlock and torque bolts as directed above.
If condition is not corrected, re-perform step 2 (to a maximum of three (3) shims) and reevaluate vehicle.
NOTE: IF THE CONDITION IS STILL NOT CORRECTED AFTER INSTALLING A MAXIMUM OF THREE (3) SHIMS, REFER TO WORKSHOP MANUAL SECTION 205-00 FOR FURTHER DIAGNOSTICS.

I Believe if you were going uphill that you were in 3rd gear. RPM's look like it based upon the speed.

Redline is controlled by the PCM but I would not exceed 3500-3700 rpms. Running in towhaul and hard pulling up a hill if the tranny downshifts you will be fine. It won't exceed the redline.

that noise almost sounds to me like either you have a leak on one of the boots or you are bleeding off excess boost.

Looking at your turbo guage you are not pushing that much boost so maybe the boots should be looked at.

That is what I think is going on. Hope Tom listens and gives his thoughts, but check the boots.

my video was with the truck unloaded i had to go into second with tow/haul on to recreate the noise, When i am hauling and going uphill losing speed down to about 60 and it shifts down into what i think is second, and I have the torque to regain speed, but the sounds are not good and i must let off and stay at 50. I checked the boots,... entire induction system. didn't find any thing that looked off, no chafing, no cracks, bands are tight, no hot spots, no obvious oil leaks,(might be a spill on top of engine and boots have collected dust), linkages to turbo feel tight and move freely. heat shields are are in great condition and fully fastened, might have a left engine mount that is showing some signs of wear. fluid is bright and no odor, full.

We're you able to figure out what the noise was? Mine started making the same noise bringing my RV home this weekend. Checked under the hood and everything is tight, so not sure what it could be.
