2005 ford freestyle 180,000+ miles knocking g sound coming from engine
I have been hearing a strange knocking sound coming from my engine mostly while accelerating or in decrease of speed. It honestly sounds like a baseball card with a clothes clip on the wheel of your bicycle. The check engine light randomly comes on and then off again.Took the car to a Ford dealership they did the diagnostic check and it said it was the torque something or other with the cvt. All in all he basically said my transmission would eventually fail and to repair it, it is $6500+ and it's not worth it. Is it possible they could have been wrong?

torgue converter. It sits between the motor and the trans.
Take it to a trans shop and see what they say. A rebuilt or used from a junkyard won't cost nearly as much from a trans shop.

I know someone who had to do a tranny in their 05 Freestyle, they got one used and still put about 5 grand into it... Seemed really steep to me, but they said that was the best they found

The freestyle probably has a CVT. They are not cheap used. I have heard they can't be rebuilt, or no one is willing to. Good luck.

We have a 2005 with 145,000 miles, lot of highway miles, and so far everything is still working great (knock on wood). Have you ever done a transmission flush?

Take it to another dealer or transmission shop and get a second, third opinion. The CVT is not cheap to replace or rebuild. Have you thought of used? Would be a cheaper option with the mileage. No sense sticking upwards of 6K into a car that isn't worth much more.
