If Ford made the 5.0L EcoBoost, it'd be one bad powerhouse. My guess it'd be almost 650ft/lbs of torque. Though if it was offered in the SD line as well as the F150..wonder how that would affect diesel sales? I mean they just spent a lot more in the R&D for a larger turbo and exhaust brake. Plus with it being a gas burner instead of an oil burner, fuel costs will be down and maintenance costs will be much less...especially when one doesn't need 4 gallons of oil every 7500+ miles.

I have had the chance to test drive the 5.0L and the 3.5L EB at work for alignment checks and first impression they beat the crap out of the 2 valve 5.4L. So all I have to say is...SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY! I want a 5.0L EB right now!

The latest edition of truck trend alludes to a bosted 5.0L code named VIPER, IIRC that will appear in the next gen Raptor trucks to replace the 6.2L.

My EB tows my 8000lbs excellent, gets 10mpg (right about what my IDI got under the same conditions), Empty I average 18mpgs in mixed driving. Freeway I usually average 21-22mpg at around 65mph. Biggest complaint I have is the soft suspension with the trailer on, its getting bags soon.

Im as happy as I thought I would be, if you expect any more out of a half-ton with a 3.5L engine and Auto in a 6K pound truck, your just an idiot who needs something to complain about.

I hope they offer it in non-Raptor varieties too (obviously, it would be top-range).

Just imagine the 2.7 EB in a standard cab and 6.5' bed with no trailer! That's what I'm thinking about - it would have to be a blast to drive and would do everything my 2007 does, like taking a load of cuttings to the landfill. Who needs a Raptor?

This engine will also feature ferrous-iron plasma spray coating for the cylinder bores, no cast iron jugs that are on the current 5.0L. Similar process for the 5.4L Cobra engines. Here's an article on the process Ford launches plasma-sprayed cylinder bores on 2011 Shelby V8 - SAE International

If you tow heavy or in hot conditions you have to run premium in the ecoboost anyway (and most people in the know recommend premium in the ecboost ALL of the time anyway); therefore the price of diesel is not any higher than premium pump gas. DEF is usually only needed about the time you change oil and a jug doesn't cost much. I also don't expect a small displacement diesel to take much more oil than a gasser.
Most every one that has towed with an ecoboost will agree that there is nothing "economical" about the ecoboost when it comes to towing fuel efficiency. It get's about the same as a big block NA V8.
If my F350 (which weighs several thousand lbs more and is way taller) can beat my old '13 ecoboost both unloaded and loaded mpg by 15-25% imagine what a smaller displacement diesel in the lighter F150 would do?
The only downfall to the diesel will be the upcharge over the price of the ecoboost. If they make it too expensive it will take a long time to pay for itself.

The Ram Ecodiesel 3.0 takes 10.5 quarts, so basically double a similar displacement gas engine.

I get out of the 350 diesel which is not bad at all and jump into the wife's sport and WOW, I have to set the cruise because it WILL get away from you quickly...

and it's very nice that our only complaint in 20k+ miles is with the Microsoft Sync system !
I rented a truck while in Colorado a few weeks ago. Requested a fun50, but ended up with a dodge 1500. I can assure you, as I have sync in my car, that the uconnect they use is just the worst. It never understood what I said, I could barely tell what it said, and you had to download apps for it to work correctly, both with my phone and iPod.

Wish they would announce the rpm's the hp and torque are made at. Have a running argument with a buddy that says the rpm's will be very high. I think not.

You're probably going to be half right. Horsepower is a product of torque and RPM, which means peak horsepower will almost always be at a high RPM. The only way that can be different is if torque drops rapidly as you get into high RPMs.

Torque on every turbocharged engine I've ever seen peaks very low. That's done because forced induction allows engineers to setup engines to build boost at low RPMs and provide outstanding low RPM power. If it's anything like the 3.5L engine you can expect peak torque to be before 3,000 RPMs with the majority of that available before 2,000 RPMs. Smaller displacement doesn't change that formula; the turbocharged 1.4L engine powering our Chevy Cruzes at work have peak torque at 2,500 RPM.

2.7 power

All I can say is that my 2.7 xlt CC with a 6inch lift, SCT Live wire Tune with 35" Tires is giving me plenty of HP, & Low end Torque and still giving me 22HWY. Yes step on it and it will lower to 17mpg. Having the SCT Live Wire LCD Screen shows me the boost levels. Mostly it needs around 5-8PSI of boost to move around town and on the HWY holding 65-70mph, it shows 3-5 psi. of boost. at 80mph it shows 9-11psi of boost, thats when you are using a lot of gas 17-18.
W.O.T. tops out at 19.8PSI. per turbo.

Again, 6inch Lift., 20" Rims, 35" tires. And still pulls like crazy

That is some great real-world info, and I think pretty relate-able for a lot of folks to how they would use their trucks.

Also great point about the increased boost required at higher speeds. We all know aero drag is a huge mileage killer, but it's nice to see someone who has put some effort into documenting it.
Reps sent!
