Early ICP in a late year model engine: Any benefits??

So as long as the ECM/PCM sees .85V from the ICP it says start!

Once the truck is running if there is any fluctuation in the ICP value at an idle, the truck goes stupid/wacko. At least that is what happened to me when my ICP sensor decided to go **** up!

Does the ICP play any role during the drive cycle?

Icp controls what the pcm is doing with the ipr.
Your issue was a bad sensor, the pcm and or the engine was unhappy with its input

So as the ICP values go up and down as you drive the truck the PCM adjusts IPR accordingly?

Thats correct.
The ipr is a metered oil leak back to the oil pan, any unused high pressure is dumped back to the pan.
The icp is just confirming what the ipr is doing
